I have a ANIB 625 model of 1989.In single action the trigger kicks back ever so slightly when fired.Purchased used but knew owner,I seriously doubt the sideplate has never been off. What would cause this and how can it be repaired?

I'm not sure what you mean. The trigger should be pulled all the way back when the hammer falls.

In single action with the hammer back after the trigger is pulled the trigger kicks forward.I have seen this on guns with bad/bubba type trigger jobs but not on a unmolested one.

What you are experiencing is the first evidence of a pending push-off condition. Even the factory fitters have been known to make mistakes. It is fixed by adjusting the angle of the trigger hook that engages the sear notch of the hammer. Very little more wear and you will find the trigger kicks forward enough to catch the double-action sear and this will prevent the gun from firing. Try cocking the un-loaded gun and then pushing forward on the hammer spur with a few pounds force, odds are the hammer will fall.

It is also possible the trigger or hammer case hardening was sub-standard in thickness and normal fitting operations got into the core metal which is soft and wears quickly. Either way the gun should go to a gunsmith that understands S&W revolvers.

This gun may fall under the S&W "Lifetime Warrantee" and the factory will fix it for you free. Call Customer Service at 800-331-0852 and ask about this, can't hurt.

No push off yet.I will switch the strain screw with one from another 625 since the one on the gun in question appears short, that could be a possibility. Next I will move to the rebound spring,if not corrected I will call S&W.Thank You for all the input.

Could this be corrected by replacing the trigger only or would I have to replace both hammer and trigger? Strain screw and rebound spring are within specs. It has to be in the hammer or trigger.Did not check with S&W ,would they have parts for a 20 yr old revolver?

Problem solved by replacing the trigger. Thanks to forum member sndbggr1484 for supplying me with the necessary part.
