I'm considering putting a Trijicon ACOG or Eotech with the flip down Magnifier on my AR15 OR and would appreciate any input yall can give as to which models I should consider, what are the pros and cons, which set up is better, and am I nuts for even considering these?

I would want something I can take to the range and use from 25-50 yards and still have the ability to use it for hog and varmit hunting at 200-300 yards. The other factor would be something that's effective in bright light as well as at night.

Well, with the Trijicon, you won't have to worry about batteries. That is a huge plus, especially if there is ever a time when SHTF, you won't have to worry about your optics running out of juice. I have a couple of buddies who are Recon Marines and they outfit their M4's with Trijicon ACOG 4x32 BAC's.

How big a magnifier are you planning on getting? I regularly shot over 200 yards and in order to place shots within an 8 inch circle I had to have at the minimum a 16 power. With a 9 power scope a hog at 300 yards is still a pretty small target. Plus at 300 yards a .223 doesnt have the power to clean kill a hog. Anyway thats my opinion. For hogs at 300 yards I still use my .308.

Grover...needing 16x minimum for hitting an 8" circle is not what I would consider the norm. It is quite possible you need that...due to eyesight, etc., but recommending that to others....I don't agree with that. Heck, at my last precision rifle class, I was putting sub-MOA groups onto a playing card at 300 yds...without any problems....and I was using a 4-16x optic. My 450 yd group was 3.5"....and my target there was just a center of mass hold on a silhouette target....didn't even have a bullseye to aim at.

To the OP, I shoot both EOTech and ACOG on my firearms. I shot AR-15s with both....and I settled on an ACOG for my M&P15 OR. There is no problem shooting from close contact out to several hundred yards with a 3.5 or 4x ACOG. I've attended multiple training courses with my ACOG equipped M&P15 and to put it simply, it just plain works. I hold a DG rating (achieved by just 1% of the students) in practical rifle. If my gear didn't perform, I wouldn't be shooting at that level.

I run an EOTech on my FNH SLP Mk1 shotgun. It works great....and there is no way I would want a magnifier on my firearm. Seen them at the training courses....was less than impressed.

I love the EoTech, but for your use the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4 would be tough to beat. It will make for a heavier (and more expensive) platform.

I would expect that most of the shooting I would do would be much closer than 300 yards more realistic would be 25-150 maybe 200. I was just wondering if the 2 optics I mentioned were effective in that range. It sounds like the ACOG is the better option based on what I'm wanting to do. I realize it's overkill on the price but I only have one AR and I don't mind spending a little extra to sport it up!!

Is there any better quality optic in that price range or less that I should consider?

Everyone has different preferences. If budget is not an issue an ACOG variant is a really good choice. I've heard the burris ar332 is another. Some guys like Grover like the higher power tubes. Nothing wrong with any of it. Really depends on what works for you.

300 yards with a .223 for a hog? Not sure about that even if you use a really nasty bullet like the Barnes TSX in a little heavier weight. I agree with Grover here.

I agree 300 yards is a little ridiculous I probably couldn't hit a cow at that distance. I'm still learning and hoping to do a little hog hunting once I get my gun set up and get proficient at shooting it.

Thanks y'all I really appreciate your input!!!

Arizona...as you yourself stated you are in the top 1%. It may be due to old eyes that I need the higher magnification. I think the point I was skirting around was the fact that at 300 yards a .223/5.56x45 really doesnt have the ability to make a clean one shot kill on a hog, unless maybe a youngster who hasnt developed his thick skin. People may disagree with me and that is the great thing about this forum we can disagree but my experience with hog hunting has shown this to me.
Oh and TJ I wish I could shoot that good without my monster glass. But I dont need the 16x to hit the 8" gong I was just shooting at an 8" gong. :D

I'm not Marine trained but a Marine buddy told me he can hit a heart sized target from 500 yards with IRONS. Either he's telling tall tales or I'm very impressed. lol

Gover...I guess I was confused.

I didn't think I was commenting on whether a .223 round was good for shooting a hog at 300 yds. Which bullet might be used to hit a hog is for a different thread, in my opinion. :)

I was stating I didn't agree that an 8" target requires an optic in the 16x range to get good hits at 300 yds. For many, military snipers used fixed 10x optics (and some still do) at ranges well past 300. At training classes, I use my EOTech (with no magnifier) on my shotgun for slug shooting out to 175 yds. (The shotgun looks just a little too crazy with the ACOG on it).:D

All is good....:)

I can't remember which forum I read this on but some guy was asking which .223 round to use in order to kill a bear. Not a cub mind you a full grown BEAR. I was thinking...... HUH?????? lol

I was wondering the same thing is the Aimpoint better or is that being suggested because it's more reasonably priced?

I can't see how an unpowered red dot that requires batteries can top an ACOG. IMO the ACOG incorporates the best of all worlds EXCEPT price. Just my 2 cents.
