Wondering if I have a pistol or an ammo issue. My MP22 consistently fails to eject and feed the second and tenth round of a twelve round magazine when using Winchester 36gr 1280FPS ammo. I ran a limited amount of Remington Thunderbolt and CCI that didn't seem to have that problem.

The only thing that sticks out is that when pulling back the slide, there seems to be an extra bit of resistance where the barrel machining changes from round to square. No finish is worn off, so I don't think it's sticking, but it does feel different than other guns.

Any thoughts?

I would lean toward an ammo issue, the best thing is to run a good amount of different ammo through it to see if that solves the problem. Does it behave differently if you load different amounts in the mag? Say 8 or 10 rounds?

My M&P22 is fairly new, I had a strange issue where the first round in the mag would stovepipe when I racked the slide... but it only happened with CCI blazer ammo. The next trip to the range I used Remington and ran 200 rounds through it with no issues.

Hope all you're dealing with is an ammo issue.

I tried six rounds and it would still fail to feed after the first shot. I have a box of American Eagle that I'll try next range trip. FWIW this Winchester runs fine in a 10/22 with the 25 round magazine.

M&P 22's, like the .22 P226 and the Colt(Umarex) 1911 .22 like HV round nose plated ammo better than bargain HP's. WW makes a 1300fps Super Speed load that works flawlessly in the M&P, as well as the other 2. Save the cheap and low velocity rounds for the revolvers. BTW, 10-22's and Marlin M60's shoot just about anything you feed them. CCI mini-mags usually work well too. Bob!!

Bob, I hear what you're saying about the ammo... but as a newbie, I've had a terrible time getting ammo. So it's been a matter of getting what I could find. I still want to try CCI mini-mags, but can't find them.

Ignition, I know what you mean about the rifle, my 15-22 has eaten everything that I've put through it. But the M&P22 didn't like the CCI Blazers, and had some Fail To Fire on American Eagle (but no failures to feed).

Do you just have the one magazine that came with the pistol?

I have five mags total, four of which are the 10 round conversions. I thought that may have been the culprit at first, but it does it with the original 12 round that came with it.

I'm with HikerDan in the ammo boat of buying whats available. I can't remember what the first 1000 rounds through it were but they were rated at less FPS than the Winchester, and ran fine.

Stovepiping when loading the first round usually indicates that you slammed the magazine into position a bit too hard. This will cause the first round to tilt up slightly in the magazine. When the slide is released, this tilt causes the cartridge to miss the barrel and forces it up and out through the ejection port just in time to be trapped by the slide closing.

It's easy to check if this is what is happening. Load a magazine and insert like you normally do. Before releasing the slide, check the position of the round at the top of the magazine - if it's tilted up (more than when you loaded the magazine, then you are susceptible to the stovepipe issue. Some have reported that closing the magazine feed lips just a bit will resolve the issue.

I had a similar problem with my M&P 22 when it was brand new. I got a couple of packs of Winchester Super Speed HP 37gr. 1330fps. because that's all they had at the time.

The first 100 rounds ran perfectly, but the second 100 ran like you describe. I switched over to some old Federal Bulk Pack stuff I found in the bottom of my range bag, and it ran perfectly again (I ran the rest of the Winchester through my M&P 15-22 with zero problems). Since then, I have been feeding it mostly Blazer Bulk and CCI Standard Velocity, both of which work 100%. Recently I have only been able to get American Eagle bulk, and it has run fine with that stuff, so far.
