My son has a Weaterby Vanguard 30.06 with a terrible trigger. He says it's got at least 1/8" take up that feels like sandpaper scraping against corragated steel. It affects his accuracy as he's never sure when it will go BANG!

(NOTE: He was a scout sniper in the USMC and went through their sniper school and helped teach marksmanship. You DON'T want to stand in front of him!)

He's ordered a Timmny drop in trigger so that will probably solve the problem.

But we're wondering if anyone else has had a probem with Weatherby triggers? Is this a problem with just his rifle or something across all Weatherby triggers?

I have done the exact same thing on two Vanguards. Didn’t even waste time on the stock trigger just replaced them. There is a recall on the bolts on some of them I think.

I actually find the newer Vanguards to have pretty good triggers. They're two stage, so unless you're used to European triggers they're a bit different than the traditional (for us) single stage triggers.

If it's the older Vanguard then it is a Howa action and trigger.

I have a S&W 1500 .308 and when I got it the trigger was awful! There are destructions online on how to adjust these triggers. I got mine better but it's still not the smoothest. I did get it quite a bit better.

The bolt recall does apply to Vanguards, S&W 1500 and Howa 1500 rifles in the appropriate serial ranges. The bolt shroud on the older versions can be assembled wrong if you take the bolt apart and don't get it screwed back together right....then if you put the bolt back in the action the striker lug can bear on the safety knob instead of the trigger...if you kick the safety off the rifle can fire! The newer/replacement bolt shroud will not go back into the rifle if it's assembled wrong.

My 10 year old Vanguard .223 came from the factory with an excellent trigger with no need to adjust it. A crisp sub 3 lb pull.

I would have said to order a Rifle Basic trigger but timneys fine to just cost a bit . I have both several RB's and one older timney .

The Vangard uses a Howa action and barrel .

The trigger on my 300wby was absolute trash too. Replaced with a 2# factory adjusted Timney and man, totally changed the game.

The 3 Mid 80's Vanguards I had (still have one) were Howa, but came with wonderful triggers! Did anyone bother to call Weatherby?

Ivan
