Truck gun battery/arsenal

fits many bills...

I like the way you think SAFireman. The revolver & levergun combo along with an 870 was exactly what I was thinking when I read the original post. Could even swap the 870 out for a coachgun once in a while.

Well, having been stuck out at the ranch without another person coming around until someone knew that we were missing got me to thinking...what combination could cover the bases that needed coverin'....

- Shotgun - with assorted shells, you could feed yourself relatively well for a period of time, and leaving it with 00 buck in the tube would handle a rising social problem (with sufficient notice). Also, you can get 12 gauge signal flares if you feel the need.

- Rifle - matched to your handgun - again, you could feed yourself at longer ranges and larger animals if need be, also could be passed to a reliable passenger to provide assistance in the event of a major social malfunction.

-Handgun - up close and personal social equalizer, preferably one small enough to conceal with a loose shirt if need be, also of sufficient size to manage an effective deterrent to interpersonal differences. Also, could be passed to a 3rd person in the event of real social breakdown.

All would need to be recorded for insurance purposes....I hate having anything stolen, but the insurance check should provide some help to replace the goods....a sturdy lockable rack for the long guns is mandatory, and out of sight is top of the list....the handgun could be stored in accordance with local codes and traditions, or could even be your daily CCW piece.

Truck gun budget - Surplus 870 $150, Decent Marlin or Winchester in your favorite caliber $500, Middle of the road wheel gun $350 - your ability to deal with uncertain and unknown circumstances = priceless ;)

Personally I still like the under seat gun safes for extended/crew cab pickups.

Interesting question. Purely for the sake of having the 3 guns
for traveling /camping I would choose from my own collection.

1. Remington 1100 ,Choate stocked with mag extension and 25.5"
trap barrel. Cost me all of $350. to put together.

2. Winchester 1892 (Miroku Japan) in 45 Colt. Holds 11 rounds .
It can be loaded up or down depending on the need.
May not be an ideal long range rifle, but surely sufficient
out to 100 yds. Besides, lever guns are just plain cool.

3. 625-6 Performance Center in 45 Colt.
Here the same caliber as the rifle, with a few speedloaders in a pouch,
to load either the revolver or carbine.

For an auto loading pistol instead of the revolver,
the 1086 Smith and Wesson 10m.m. is powerful, reliable,
and holds 10 rounds of 10m.m. with a couple spare magazines
in the back pocket.

You need 3 things in a truck gun (or guns).
(1) Low cost and nothing special. Don't want anything that will break your heart if stolen or destroyed.
(2)Accurate and reliable.
(3) Ammo that you can get anywhere. A cal. you can get in Dark Of The Moon, Id.
H&R Handi-Rifle in .30/30 with a 20 ga. extra barrel. S&W model 10 or 13. Put the whole kit behind the seat for under $500.

For rifles, it depends on whether the primary purpose is defense against two legged critters, or meat hunting. If the former, my Colt M4, if the latter my Rem 760 pump carbine in 30-06.

Pistol: my slightly tricked out Colt series 70 or Glock 17. Colt loaded with Federal 230 gr HPs, Glock with Speer Gold Dots.

Shotgun: My Benelli 12 ga riot gun.

For fairly low cost, with some rapid fire capability, an SKS, or a lever in 30/30 or 44 Mag will work.

However something to think about, especially in Urban areas, is that most law enforcement agencies use an AR type rifle...

So if you have to "bail out" and "get busy", any other rifle besides an AR might cause you to be labeled "non LEO" at least, or maybe even "bad guy" on sight.

If I am on a hunting trip I like having a 308 of some kind, that can double as a hunting gun, like a M1 Garand Tanker, a M1 A Scout Squad, or an H&K 91.

Shotgun, an 870, 12 ga.

Handgun, either a 1911, or if on a hunting trip a S&W 4" 44 Mag.

Sounds like we've reached a consensus of sorts on either a remington or a benelli shotgun. Now is this cause of reliablity or availablity or both?

I bought one of the $300 AK74 Truck guns last year. Has been my four wheeler and truck gun ever since.

Well, let's say I'm going to be out in my truck for a while. As in a long while....

Picking from what I already have:
1. Ruger Mini-14/6 mags.

2. Mossberg 500/18 inch barrel. I've had this gun for 30 years and shoot it like a rifle. At least at 100 yards. lol

3. Glock 22/6 mags. This is a trade in from the local sheriff's department. Not much finish, but it shoots good.
