Good afternoon,
I have an old Top-break revolver, serial 41221, .38 short, 6in barrel with fixed sights. It appears to have 6 screws unless I'm missing any.

Hi There,

Welcome to the Forum!

Your revolver appears to be a S&W Perfected model. These are
very interesting revolvers to collect. Others will be along that
know more and will help.

Cheers!

Welcome to the Forum. There were a couple models of double action 38 top-breaks. The 38 Double action had a small sideplate on the left side. The other is the 38 Perfected chambered in 38 S&W. It had the frame and mechanism of the Model 1903 Hand Ejector and the barrel/cylinder of the 38 DA top-break, having a large sideplate on the right side. The theory was that the double locking system would function better with smokeless powder, but proved not necessary since the 38 S&W is a rather anemic caliber. There were almost 60,000 made from 1909 to 1920. Your revolver likely shipped around 1913 to 1914. It does appear to have a rather large barrel bulge??

I don't notice a larger barrel bulge

Take a look about 2” from cylinder- if you have a ruler or straightedge you can see if it’s the picture or actually a bulge.
Welcome and enjoy the forum!

Hi There,

I think I see what might be a bulge. A straight edge will disclose it if it is
really a bulge. If it is really there, one should be able to "feel" it with their
fingers when slid length-wise along the barrel.
