Trying to Identify Year

My son inherited this 38 from his grandfather. Trying to identify the year of the gun. Any help is much appreciated.

Smith & Wesson introduced the Chiefs Special stainless Model 60,
the world's first stainless steel handgun, in October 1965.

The company started using the R serial number series in 1969.

Several others that bracket your son's Model 60 in the database
shipped in September 1975. The company did not ship guns in
serial number order, but it's reasonable to think your son's shipped
that year as well.
