I have come across a nice revolver that I want. However, I usually only buy mint or near mint. This revolver has been shot very little, it has generally excellent bluing and wood, but some mild muzzle wear. The price is pretty darn good. I do shoot everything I buy, but I take care of it, too. So, trying to decide whether to go against my own rules and buy something with muzzle wear or stick to my guns (pun intended) and not buy anything with any visible blemish. Thoughts? Advice?

Depends on what you want it for. If it's to fill a hole in your collection of mint guns, then a mint gun makes sense, but if you are going to shoot it, I wouldn't mind some wear. Actually, I kind of like some reasonable wear on older revolvers. Gives 'em some character.

Generally, if my gut instincts say,"NO" - then I should heed that advice.

Alternatively, you could buy the gun - and resell when (and, if) you find a better copy.

Then .... you could find that some of those old, used, guns shoot like a dream and have some history that makes them well worth owning.

Good Luck, (and we want pictures!)

My gut isn't necessarily saying "no." It's a 4 inch model 15. I haven't had too easy of a time finding one in this condition. Been looking for a while. While they're by no means rare, of course, it seems that most people who bought 4" 15's didn't just keep them in a box in the closet.

I'm like you when it comes to the guns I buy but one that has turned into my favorite shooter is a K22 5 screw that is a 95% gun with wear in the bluing at the muzzle. When I first got it the wear bothered me a little but after the first visit to ther range that went away as it's a terrific shooter and now it is one of my favorites. I've let several friends shoot it and they have tried to buy it after a few cylinders full and I just smile and say it's not for sale.

I find a little wear of the blued finish on a well maintained revolver to be attractive. In the case of a revolver that is going to be strictly a collector/ safe queen, LNIB is preferred but for a shooter I don't mind a little wear since it will certainly have more as I carry and use it. I think there is a difference between character and neglect.

I guess I'm going to pass on the 4" model 15. I wanted it, but when somebody outbid me up to $800 for a gun with holster wear at the muzzle, I figured we had both lost our senses.
