As we may be again about to engage in something of a debate on gun control in the U.S. following the Tucson murders, I found it interesting that recently (June, 2010), there was a shooting incident in the UK (with its very strict gun laws) in which 12 people were killed and 11 injured.
The shooter used a side by side, exposed hammer shotgun and a bolt-action .22.
In response, some in the UK have suggested new firearms laws, requiring mental health investigations for firearms permits, and perhaps further gun restrictions.
Several news reports focused on the 5 and 10 round magazines the shooter had for his .22, his "telescopic sight" for his rifle, and the fact that he had tried to recover a double barrel shotgun from a friend that was storing it for him and that gun had automatic ejectors that would have allowed him to reload more quickly and kill more people.
There may be further gun control efforts in the UK in response. Of course the truth is that such laws won't stop crazy people from doing crazy things, or people dedicated to doing violence from doing violent things.
Just something to think of as we begin another "high-capacity" magazine ban discussion in our own country.
