I recently traded my Smith 19 revolver to a friend for a Smith 3914. His wife is going to get her permit, and wanted a revolver. Upon seeing and holding (then shooting) my model 19, she fell in love. In trade, my buddy gave me a Smith 3914 with a blued slide over a silver alloy frame. Frame and slide have matching numbers, and both are labeled 3914. I wondered if the frame was stripped of its finish, but I doubt it as there is no trace of blue/black anywhere on the frame. Then I read that Lew Horton put out a limited edition run of 5967 (500 pistols) and 3914 (200 pistols) back in 1990, both featuring blued slildes over silver alloy frames. My friend bought the gun used, and the only history known is that the pistol was originally owned by a law enforcement officer who traded it in a few years back for something in a bigger caliber.
Is there any way for me to tell if this pistol is one of the Horton limited editions? Or am I now the proud owner of some custom pistol? Plese help me learn what I have before I do something crazy and actually carry/shoot the gun and ruin its collector value, if it has any.
