I just saw the news that we lost the U.S. ambassador and two or three of the staff at the Libyan embassy.
This is a very sad day for there families.
My prayers go out for all of them.

Things seem to be spinning out of control in that part of the world, I'm afraid there are rough seas ahead.

Jimmyj, it is my understanding ,according to the news report on Fox , that the other two murdered were USMC. I hope and pray that our Government can ack. that an attack on our men and embassies is an act of war and needs to be addressed accordingly. I pray for the safety of our men and women serving to protect and defend us and would hope that their lives are not wasted by a government for political ends.

Fox News had a psychiatrist on this morning who said that the people who do this sort of thing act with zero regard to consequences of their actions. That is, they cannot be counted on to act rationally.

During the "cold war" the USA and the USSR had many nuclear tipped missiles aimed at each other. The assumption was that no matter who struck first, both sides would suffer an unacceptable level of destruction.

We cannot count on this with Muslim countries. In other words, even if they know we will retaliate they will attack us over an insult to the Prophet.

IMO, this is an act of war, but I favor a measured response. Something like trade sanctions (assuming they can be enforced) financial penalties, and the likely expelling of the Libyan ambassador to the USA. Certainly, this would put US financial aid in jeopardy. These are all possibilities. For example in Egypt, most or all of the aid goes to the military and we do have a lot of influence there. Canceling that aid could backfire.

We need to drill for petroleum everywhere or we risk getting the foreign sources cut off. I don't think anyone wants to send US troops in harms way in the middle east for oil.

Edit, since I have heard more recent reporting on this incident I now believe it was a hard core terrorist attack planned to coincide with 9/11.

The US wanted to help Libiya and Eygpt, this is what we get for helping them. This is B.S., really starting to get ticked off

The news mentioned the Lybian Security Forces but not the U.S. Marines ??

I wondered about that too. The electronic media said nothing of the Marine guards this morning. They did say the Libyan security forces "battled the attackers for 2-hours." We shouldn't have tried to station an Ambassador there. It sounds like he had very little security.

Folks,

I edited some posts and delete several others.

I share your outrage, but let's focus on those killed and/or those responsible. Do not focus on the any of our Government officials and turn this into a political thread.

From the general rules:
6. Derogatory, CRUDE names for any government official will NOT be tolerated.
Respect the OFFICE, if not the holder.

Leave the politics out of it or the thread gets locked.

Tough situation. Condolences to those families who lost loved ones. Remember that their Govt did not instigate these riots, but we should still cut off all foreign aid and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

There was a report a few minutes ago that there were no Marines on guard just the Libyan forces and that there were Marines inbound now.

I wondered about that too. The electronic media said nothing of the Marine guards this morning. They did say the Libyan security forces "battled the attackers for 2-hours." We shouldn't have tried to station an Ambassador there. It sounds like he had very little security.

The Marines that were killed were called in from another area. According to what I have read the embassy was guarded by Libyan guards?? I do not understand this. A handful of Marines would have given a different result. I have never heard of an American embassy not guarded by Marines.

The attack happened in Bengazi Libya, at the US Consulate, NOT at the Embassy.

After the usual US apology for offending muslims, and the later typical conferences about holding those responsible via working with the Libyan government to bring the killers to justice comes a NEW development not mentioned by our leaders before! It seems we overlooked something . . .

Hmm . . . it appears our government may have been caught flat-footed again! Reports are now leaking out that the gunmen appear to have functioned in a well-trained military manner, a small organized group of attackers with automatic weapons and RPGs . . . and that Al-Qaeda put a stinger of death into a vulnerable US again . . . on 9-11.

The "guards" at our consulate were Libyans and it seems they "fled" when the operation began.

Yep . . . it looks like they may have caught us flat-footed again . . . even on 9-11!

And you should check the news to see what happened at the US Embassy in Cairo. Again, the Egyptian security forces stood back and watched. So much for if we love them (and pay them off in the process), they will love us back. It's all being blamed on an amateur movie about Mohammed that some American made, somewhat like the cartoons from Denmark.

It is starting to look more and more like a planned terrorist attack. If that is the case, then holding the host government at fault may not truly be a good idea. It may work into the terrorist's plan. If the host government is providing security and the security turns tail they're either yellow or in cahoots with the attackers. Either way we need to let the host government know if they cannot provide security the facility will be closed or we will provide security ourselves. The Libyan attack was with rocket propelled grenades. We have vehicles resistant to those and should place them in the facilities.

I doubt that the film was the root cause.

It has been ongoing for many years, frightening as to what extremes they will go through for their cause. You eliminate one top banana, and there are thousands that want to replace him.

Say a prayer for those that have passed.
