Three or four times a week I check Wally for ammo. The gun stores get my visit once a week. For the past few months, you don't even have to ask. That shake of the head tells you everything you need to know.

Wife sent me this morning to a "farm store" we have here called Attwoods. You know, the kind of place you go for the purchase of barbed wire, fence posts, salt blocks and saddle blankets.?

My mission was to secure dog food for the greyhound my wife and daughter own together.

Just out of habit, I went buy the un attended ammo shelves, which as usual, had probably 2000 boxes of no name, 12 gauge ammo.

Much to my surprise, right in the middle of all that 12 gauge were thirteen boxes of Federal .22. I quickly grabbed ten of the aforementioned and checked out with the dog food. By the way, the price was $1.99 per box of 50. Hey! It could be worse!

Upon reaching the car, I had an epiphany..."why leave the other three boxes on the shelf"...to which I whipped right back in an secured them too! Can you believe with all the miles I drive and gasoline I burn in search of ammo I would let three boxes go unpurchased? Damn! I need a reality check!

You know, at any other time, this would be a non story, but somehow, it just made my day.

My wife is gone now and I'm baby sitting with my granddaughter, however when she gets back, I believe I'll just run over to Wally World...just for grins!

Hence the ammo shortage. No offense, but too many people out there have the "why leave some for others" attitude.. which now is half the problem.

Nice find Charlie.

Don't blame you, Charlie. Good find!

Charlie

If someone had been right beside me and wanted some, I would have been happy to share the find.
Otherwise, I'd do exactly what Charlie did.

At this point, I would have bought it too Charlie. I recently (1 1/2 months ago) went to the local Wally World, and they had 5 - 550 packs of Federal .22 on the shelf. I initially said that I would take all five, but changed my mind, and told the clerk to leave two boxes on the shelf for the next person. What they did was tell the next person that even though the ammo was on the shelf, the new WW policy here was that they could not sell ANY .22 ammo anymore. They sent him away without the ammo that was sitting right there on the shelf. Really weird, but I know the guy that it happened to, and he had no reason to lie to me. I heard it straight from him.

Buy what you can afford when you find it if the price is right. Most of the "panic buyers" were people who are not regular shooters. I am convinced that those type people have all they care to have for now, and the shelves will refill soon. I am already seeing the inventory go up at the local gunshops.

I wonder if many of these panic buyers you refer to are also first time gun owners.. and if many of them went with .380s and 9mms because those have been impossible for me to find. Actually.. regular non +P .38 specials are tough to find as well.

I'd buy what I wanted without going out of my way to "save some for the rest". I wouldn't buy all the boxes of something just because they had it and I could get it.. but didn't need it.

In Charlie's case with the .22s.. I'd probably take em all.

Our two WM Super Stores have treated me quite well over the last two weeks. Two hundred rounds of 9mm FMJ, 50 rounds of .45 JHP and 50 rounds of .38+P. Could have purchased more but I like to leave some for others.

Before you try to gut Gutpile Charlie, relax, ammo will be back in stock with plenty for all somtime in the future. Learn this lesson well, build you ammo supply over time. I've noted on both Gunbroker and Auctionarms that all the hard to find ammo is slowly comming back. Yes, the prices are still high, but that to will pass. More power to you Charlie.

So that's what happened. I must have been there just after you, because the guy swore that he had just put out 13 boxes.

If you can use it, and can afford it, buy it. All you other folks, quit whining. It's not Charlie's fault that you failed to prepare for this situation.

Well, just as an update, went into Wally World a while ago and went through the litany: "Got any 22, any 9, any 38, any 357, any 45?" BINGO!

I scored two boxes of Blazer Brass 45ACP!

Damn, it's been a good day!

Now I didn't see it in the case, when the girl said she had the Blazer, she just reached under the counter. Said that way she didn't have to unlock the case? What ever that means?

The Blazer was $14.00 something a box. That wasn't too bad.

Hey Charlie - at the Wallyworld here in Morgantown they have 22's 9mm, 38spec, 357 mag and 45 in stock.

Went to a gun show. 50 ct. standard .22, $7.25 a box on one table. I couldn't believe it.

I went to WallyWorld today to buy dog and cat food. Just out of curiosity, I went to the sporting goods dept. They had four boxes of .270 and two boxes of 300 Win. mag. Of course, the normal full shelves of shotgun shells, and three pounds of Pyrodex. That was it! I hear some stores are getting ammo, but they must all be back east or in the South. Not here.

As I said in another post, I was going plinking with the grandkids and Godsons this weekend so I went looking for some. Cabela's had 3 WW bricks of 500 for $26.99. BassPro had the same type for $19.99(@ 10 boxes). Finally, I checked at a local store (Dunn's)and they had Federal, all you could want for $14.99. Dunn's is frequented by hunters and fisherman, the other two by everyone. Panic buying or hoarding, it dosen't seem to be hunters.

I know many of the fellow board members, like me, will shoot several thousand rounds a month of various calibers. They, like I, will buy in bulk whenever the oportunity presents itself. But let's face it, we're not a large group. And in truth, have been buying and shooting this way for years (I since 1977).

I truely feel the frenzy is new people buying into the panic created by the media and the web.

I can't wait for the yard sales after everything settles down

BTW, I don't do Walley.

No disrespect intended and not meant to be argumentative. I simply refuse to participate in the stampede. I've sold primers to individuals for the purchase price when I acquired the primers also sold powder in the same manner. Behavior by some individuals of personal acquaintance I've lost respect for over the issue of price gouging. It's simply not right. I've heard the rationalization for this behavior and accept that any thing can be rationalized by those involved. I'm not buying in to their position on the subject matter. Let us simply agree to disagree and maintain a semblance of civility.
