I was recently shopping at Lowes and went to use my military discount. I have used this discount for years in this same Lowes in NJ. I was informed that my Honorable Discharge doesn't mean anything. At the time I didn't think much about it until I started to drive home. The closer I got to home the angrier I became. I called the customer service number and was quoted the policy. Basically their policy is that you have to be on active/reserve duty, retired or a disabled Veteran. I argued that a Veteran is a Veteran regardless of how much time was served. I stated to them that I served as a US MARINE in two combat zones and came home with out physical wounds from combat. I have carried by buddies to helo's for extraction who paid the ultimate price. I live with that everyday. this fell on deaf ears and they again stated their lame policy and then tried to sign me up for their credit card. I will never shop at Lowes again. Anyone with similar stories?

I agree that when it comes to these kind of perks/discounts, it's lame to differentiate between active duty/retired/wounded/etc. If someone or some business wants to honor those who are currently serving and veterans, they should offer the perk/discount to anyone who's serving/served, across the board.

On the other hand, I believe calling them (Lowe's, in this case) unpatriotic is a bit of a stretch. The fact of the matter is that no one owes me, you or anyone else who's served anything. The large majority of businesses out there offer no discounts whatsoever but this hardly means they're all unpatriotic. Noting the badge by your name, it's the same thing with cop perks. Is any business who refuses you free food/coffee cop-haters or something like that? Of course not.

That outright pisses me off. I've never been treated that way as a Veteran there HOWEVER. Hearing your story of a fellow MARINE being treated that way just lost all of my business for good! .

I know good Marines that have served, were injured but not disabled but discharged for their injury, who have given BLOOD to their country. If some ANG 18 year old punk can get a discount because he serves every other weekend......but my injured Marines can not.......I am not cool with that.

The reason for giving the discount is actually to supplement some body actively serving in the military due to there poor wages. The big box store I work at does the same thing. They have certain times of the year that they offer a discount to all military including veterans. It is not to be a disrespect issue. I do not even get a discount for working there.

Sounds like a bad chain :/

Every store I've ever worked in i got at least 10% haha

I go to the local Lowes and all I have to do is show them my VA Hospital badge as proof and I get the 10% discount. Any veteran gets a discount at my Lowes. :)

I think the OP should check with corporate on the policy.

I find it a bit strange to try to get a discount from a store simply because one is a veteran.

Lowes, and Home Depot, gives 10% discounts to retired and disabled veterans, and to active duty personnel.

The disabled vet (disabled because of his/her service) has Service Connected on his/her VA Card. I am aware of some who have received this discount just by showing their VA card even though they are not Service Connected. And, I saw posts (can't recall if it was here or not) of a Lowes who gave all Vets with a VA card the discount.

I have never used my VA Service Connected card to receive a discount at either store.

I do, however, appreciate their policy and intent.

I think it is up to them if they give a discount and to whom they choose to give it.

Here is their policy, mine honors all veterans all the time. May be a local store thing.

Military Discount

Lowe's established the 10% Military Discount to support the men and women who are currently serving our country in the Armed Services1 and to honor Retired Veterans and VA Recipients.2 This 10% discount is also extended to the immediate family3 of those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients.
To qualify for the Everyday 10% Military Discount, you must:
Be currently serving in, or retired from, a qualifying branch of the Armed Services, or be the immediate family member of someone who is and have a valid military ID Card.
Or:
Be a veteran who receives VA benefits and have a valid Veteran Identification Card (VIC).
We honor all Veterans on three specific holidays: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. During these three holiday weekends, we extend the discount to all veterans who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 or other proof of service. The Lowe’s Military Discount is extended to the Veteran community on these three holidays only.

First,
THANKS for your service.

You have now received more than I got from this society for my service in Viet Nam more than 40 years ago. ;)

I did eventually get a free Driver's License for life from my state. :D

Exactly.

This board is very Vet friendly.
We do appreciate your service.
The wounded and disabled Vets should get whatever they need in care and supplements for life- period.

But, I always thought the rest of us were supposed to just get back to living life.
I don't remember asking for a discount anywhere, anytime, for anything because I was a Vet.
Actually, I have to say that seems rather unbecoming to me. Just my opinion.
As my old platoon Sgt would say "Suck it up and drive on, troop."

Back about 2006, I was on leave from the police mission in Afghanistan and went into Lowe's to buy a push (no gas engine) mower to take back over there. The nice lady at the check-out counter gave me the 10% discount, after I told her that I didn't think I'd ever have the opportunity to use an extended warrenty.

My son is retired Navy. Every Time he tells me he bought something at Lowes I ask him if he got the discount and every time he says he forgot to ask for it.

Personally, As a USMC vietnam veteren, 1964/1965, I find it unbecoming to think a discount is thought of as a right. As for low pay, my wife and I ate soup for 3 days before I got paid because she fed 2 stray dogs are last two hot dogs in 1963. By the way, at that time I was a lowly PFC and making either $98 or $103 a month plus a BAQ of $50 and living off base. When discharged in 1966, I didn't expect or receive any special treatment, nor should I.
To me this is the atitude that is "killing" the Country now.

The man in front of me at Lowes asked for his military discount and said he was former Army. While checking out, I casually asked the clerk about the military discount police. She said they happily give it to army, navy, air force and Marines. I asked why not the Coast Guard and she said, "they aren't
military." I carefully told her they are and she was adamant in her position of four services only. Knowing the answer, I asked her if she ever heard of Douglas Munro. She didn't of course and I explained he was a Medal of Honor recipient, which is a military medal. She said, "Perhaps, but he evidently didn't get the Congressional Medal of Honor, so can't be a "real" military person." I left...puzzled.

Lowes has been very generous and Freely given me my military discount.
I have been so pleased with their kindness that I only shop there, and never go to Homedepot anymore.
I`m sorry to hear your having trouble up there in "that gun hating nj place"
Bring your money done here to "Gods Country" NC and I`ll get you your discount /or give it to you my own self.
