I haven't seen this particular type of modification performed before on K targets. I'm guessing they now fit flush with the gun butt. Interesting. I'm wondering how they'd look, fit and feel mounted.
I have seen some where all the checkering was removed and cut even with the butt frame. Gives a little more to hold onto than magnas and makes them a little easier to conceal. Have not seen any like those where the checkering was left and some added to the bottom.
Back when they first came out, the Wyoming Highway Patrol got 150 new Model 66s. Upon issue of these, the patrolmen were required to carry them and no longer permitted to carry private weapons. Due to the quality of the newly obtained revolvers, there was little or no argument.
THey had the target stocks. The Patrol was a part of the Highway Dept. and the engineers took a dim view of those cocky cops in their fancy cars.
The guns came in and the " Highway Dpt. engineer" in charge of supplies and inventory took the stocks off all of the guns, went to the machine shop and ground the grips down on a bench grinder, just like the one picture above to "improve" them for use with speed loaders. He didn't modify the bottoms like those pictured, He also used a vibra-pencil to scrawl a WHD serial number on the side plates of the guns.
He mixed the grips up so that any that might have matched no longer did. He felt that the patrolmen were too attached to their firearms and this might prevent them from being so obsessed with their side arms.
I can tell you there were some sick looking Patrolmen when they saw the butcher job on their brand new guns.
I second sending grips to VM. Here is a set me modified for me.
