NM DPS relisted most of the states they had dropped in the last few months. But they didn’t put South Carolina and Kentucky back on their list. Also Louisiana has not added NM back on the list of states those states honor. WV, OH & FL did add NM Back to their lists. As soon as Wyoming sees they are not listed on the NM DPS Page they will drop NM.

July 1, 2012 Mississippi will honor all other states permit/licenses. That is 23 additional states they will honor. Other states will add Mississippi soon after 7/1 because they will now honor theirs. HB 695 was signed by the Governor in May.

On July 1, 2012 Nevada will add South Carolina to the list of states it honors. Nevada Sheriffs' and Chiefs' Association voted to add SC and this year and voted not to drop any of the other states they honor. Let’s hope this trend continues.

OK Governor signed SB1785 https://www.sos.ok.gov/documents/legislation/53rd/2012/2R/SB/1785.pdf
That will allow Residents from nonpermitting carry states to carry in Oklahoma. The new law goes into effect in November. Looks like it will cover residents of Arizona, Alaska, Vermont and Wyoming as these states allow permitless carry. They must carry their state issued Drivers License or State ID to show they are a resident of a permitless carry state.. I am hoping the Oklahoma OSBI lists those states whose residents will be able to carry on just their state ID.

www.handgunlaw.us has been updated to show the changes mentioned above that are in effect at this time. Others will be added when they become law. I also what to “Thank” everyone for the kind words you have had for Handgunlaw.us in the past. I believe Handgunlaw.us has the most accurate and up to date information on carrying firearms on the web. Yes I do work at it but it is the people who send me information and give me heads up on changes that make it what it is today. I could never do this by myself. Without assistance from people just like you Handgunlaw.us would not be what it is today. Again “Thank You” for all your assistance over the years. I hope you continue to assist us as your input has proven invaluable.

Thanks Gary!

When you say OK will allow residents from non-permitting states to carry, would that include Illinois?

Before WI issued, I couldn't carry in MI, because I didn't have a license from my home state. That didn't make sense to me.

1st page of that OK link from Gary states
"...if the state is a nonpermitting carry state, this state shall reciprocate under the permitting law of that state."

I think this means if your home state allows carry in some fashion without a permit then OK will allow you to do the same.

Thanks Gary!!!

That is the way it looks to me. If a state allows permitless carry then the residents of that state would be allowed to carry in OK with just their state ID or Drivers License. But the state has to have permitless carry.

I find that confusing too. If you can't carry at all in Chicago outside the home, how would you get your gun to Oklahoma?
Would you have to buy one in Oklahoma and sell it back before you went back across the Illinois line? Just wondering.

I rule out ever setting foot in Illinois myself. I was thinking
of traveling to Oklahoma this month myself. I carry when I
go there but every time I make a trip I have to check out the
current law for Oklahoma in case anything has changed.

New Mexico sure did open up a can of worms messing around with the reciprical agreements.

Typo in your posted link, I fixed it for you. (In case there is someone out there who doesn't know about handgunlaw.us)

I wasn't going to editorialize, but I was thinking the same thing about NM stirring the pot. I applaud OK for 'opening' their requirements, and sympathize with the LEO's in that state who will have to carry a large notebook with all the rules from all the states in it.

Too bad all the states can't just state "2A applies" and be done with it.

Only Residents of Alaska, Arizona, Wyoming and Vermont will be allowed to carry on their state ID in OK when the law goes into effect.

Thinking about this I don't think there will be many carrying in OK on their ID. If you live in AK, AZ or WY and carry you will most likely have a permit from your state. This will help those from VT the most.

Martya, Thank You. Glad you mentioned it as I post this on more than one site and I went to those others and fixed it there. I write this in Word and the spell check always shows the link underlined as misspelled. I don't pay as much attention to that as anything else as it is always shown as incorrect. This time is was. Thank you again.

NM police only need be concerned with NM law. You have to follow that state's CCW laws, regardless which recognized state permit you hold.

If you travel, you must be familiar with the laws of each state you travel through. This is especially important when a state requires you notify any police officer who makes contact with you (e.g., traffic stop, ID check or whatever the reason for the contact). You must also know in which areas CCW is specifically forbidden. East of Pennsylvania, you can't even carry a sharp stick without a permit.
