Any reason to letter this New Departure Fourth model? It's a 5" barrel, nickel appears original, I haven't pulled the grips off yet because all my tools are put up while I remodel the interior of my house.
I believe the 189048 serial puts it around 1905-1906. I know the market is soft on these compared to other models I collect so would you letter it if it was yours?

If those stocks are original to the gun, I would letter it. It just may be a special order for someone special.

Thats the only thing pushing me to letter it, I was going to post a question later today asking how many top breaks received MOP grips because they seem to be more common on them than other models.
I've looked around on gunbroker and through a couple pages of this forum and counted 20 top breaks with mop and medallions(those seem easier to verify by pictures than no medallions).
I went through a similar scenario with the N frame and never could find another that had factory pearl stocks so I figured it was 1 of a handful or maybe the only one.

How much do they charge for those letters? Probably help with the value if it is a rare or super collectible gun like a Colt SAA but certainly not on some less desirable models.

It's $100 for non S&WHF or S&WCA members $75 if you are a member. For desirable models I think it's worth it for sure.

Well, here we go again--and there's a BIG clue from H Richard right up above! It ain't about the what, it's about the who---and the first answer is neither you nor ANYBODY else knows whether or not to get a letter until AFTER you have the letter!!

I lettered every single gun in my collection---target guns from the beginning (NM #3's) right on through to the end of the "five screws"----considered the letters as frosting on the cake-----part of the package. Were many of the letters plain vanilla? Of course, that's simply confirmation of the way S&W distributed their products.

Now, back to the who: S&W sold their products to any and all who had the money to pay for them----and back the day they sold a goodly number of guns direct to individuals------all of whom are more interesting than the XYZ Distributor---and some of whom are even more interesting.

Let's talk about K-22's---common as dirt, right? One of the more than a few in my collection wasn't sold---it was given away. It was given to the fellow S&W credits with the development of the 357 Magnum cartridge. The last sentence of note in that letter said "This is a very important revolver." I about wet my pants!!

How about the cost of the letter? The next question is "Compared to what?"

I paid $3700 for this particular K-22 (a 2nd Model)----bought it because it was better than the one I already had. It sold along with the rest of my collection after I decided it'd be best to leave behind a pile of money rather than a pile of guns. It sold sight unseen with one phone call that might very well have lasted for 2-3 minutes---and it sold for the price the buyer said he'd be willing to pay------before any mention of an asking price---and it was A LOT!!!!

Now for the bad news---the sad news really: The fellow I bought the gun from had owned it for TEN YEARS---and never lettered it. After learning what he'd had, he said "I guess that'll teach me!"

Does it teach you anything---besides making decisions about things you don't know the first thing about?

Thanks for the reply Ralph, you're right and I think it is worth a letter just for the chance it might have went to an individual vs a store. If you need anymore Jelly, BBQ, or Pickled products shoot me an email and I'll send you out another box!

shown50,

My opinion having collected Safety's for many, many years in the past is this...Why not Letter it just to see if it comes back as I believe it will!! The main reason being...5" Barreled Safety's aren't that easy to come by & if it Letters as I have good reason it would even more so...Especially if the Medallion Pearls are original as well...I can't see it being money not wisely spent!!

My basis for this is...Being you noted the Letter would be a Third of what you have invested & I believe it's definitively worth investing $400 total...Just my personal opinion of course!!

Can anyone shed some light the finish treatment? It appears to be a pebble finish.

Mike,

Good Eye...Never caught that until I downloaded the Left Side to edit it...Hmmm!! I also took notice judging by what I see of the Stock Panel fit to the Frame on the Left Side...I have reason to believe they are "NOT" the Stocks it shipped with!!

Given that...Guess I better take a closer look next time before I go spouting off about the "Plus" side of what I saw...Sorry for giving you false hopes "shown50"!!

Thanks for the reply, I am going to get a letter on it. I had read online that 1.5", 2", 6", 8",and 10" were the more scarce lengths. I own a nickel 2" Fourth model with black grips but the finish is rough, so I was happy to get this one for what I consider a good deal. He had a really nice tip up but $500 was a little more than I wanted to pay for it.

shown50,

Alright...Judging by what I'm seeing in the last photos you posted...Where did the "Pebble Like Finish" Mike questioned go to...Looks to have magically disappeared ...Hmmm!!

Given the above...Maybe you ought to take a couple more overall photos of both sides of the Revolver again because something must have been up with the Camera you took the earlier ones with at the time...Just a suggestion!!

See if these are any better, I'm remodeling my house right now so I'm limited on light and places to take pictures. I can take them outside if these are too dark.

I'm trying to learn more about MOP grips from S&W, is there a book specifically about them?

I know they originally came without medallions until the Chicago? World's fair around 1894.

The medallions changed size around the 10s-20s.

They discontinued MOP in the late 20s then brought them back ~1932 and from my best guess ended in 1936(haven't seen any letters showing them past 1936) because of inferior materials.

What else should I know? What do yall mean by pebbling? I haven't seen many pairs in person that I know are a real S&W product.

Thanks..."Much" better photos...Not sure what happened the first time around because that "Pebble Effect" now seems to be gone!!

Also...Now that you've decided to request a Letter...Think it best I hold off with any further assumptions about your Revolver until the Letter comes back...Ha!!-Ha!!

Also...As to what you noted as being the Scarcest Barrel Lengths...All that is for the most part true!! Just to clear things up a bit...What I noted about 5" Barreled Safety's being hard to come by stems from past experience when I was still seriously collecting Safety's...I personally found Safety's with 5" Barrels much harder to cross paths with than Safety's having 6" Barrels having owned quite a few more with 6" Barrels than 5-Inchers...Must've been looking in the wrong places!!

Thanks, when you were collecting how hard were boxes to find?
