Hey guys I started a new thread for the Gun since the Certificate thread already had 26 comments.

What I know is a good friend's Father-in-Law is looking to pass it along. He picked it up in 1944 while stationed in Germany with the 787 Tank Battalion. He was a T-4 Technical Sergeant and acquired the gun from a German soldier.

The Gun is a Walther PPK 7.65mm Produced during WWII. It is an Eagle over N and has the German NAZI Police Eagle C proof mark.

This gun is really clean both inside and out. The finish is between 90%-95%. It has two original magazines and a Robert Larsen holster.

I know this is a Smith&Wesson forum but if anyone knows how much one of these plus accessories would go for I'd greatly appreciate you chiming in.

**UPDATE** Hey, does anyone know what Eagle over J means? I noticed at the end of the barrel there is an Eagle over N and an Eagle over J.

I checked around and can only come up with an Eagle over J after 1952. It was used to indicate a part replacement. To add confussion the Eagle over J on the gun does not look the the 1952 proof mark.

Any help would as always be appreciated

Here's the PIC

Very nice photos! I'd be interested what some Walther-knowledgeable people might have to say about this pistol.

As I mentioned in the last thread on this gun, my deceased stepfather-in-law, J.J. Peattie, signed the bringback authorization. For this reason, I would like to be first in line if the pistol is offered for sale.

Thanks for the great pics!

Note that the right grip is cracked. That will surely affect value.

Frankly, I hope that Paladin buys it. That is so cool that his relative signed the capture papers! Small world...The holster may be the one used with the gun, but I don't think it was really intended for a PPK. Too long, which resulted in the toe being crushed.

It should stay in the family.........the crack in the grip is common and part of its personality.

T-Star,
You called it about the right grip there is also a crack on the bottom of the right grip around the lanyard. In addition to the cracks there is very minor warping along the front end of both grip.

Your keen eye has also picked up that the holster is about 1/2" longer than the gun. Maybe it was for a PP.

Another thing would be that the magazines may not be original since they're not serialized to the gun.

I'm not sure what a rig like this goes for so any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the input.

**Check out the UPDATE on the First Page** Eagle over J?

I found an Eagle over J that I've been unable to verify is from the time the gun was manufactured. The only Eagle over J I found was from 1952 and beyond. But the 1952 Eagle is not the same. The one from 1952 meant some kind of repair or part replacement.

Please see PIC in original post.

Thanks for any help,

kobsw

The eagle J from the 1939 proof law also means a repair or replacement. Is there any evidence of repair or replaced parts on the PPK?

I have a Charlin (French) shotgun. It orginally had 65mm chambers. It evidently became German war booty and was taken back to Germany where the chambers were lengthened to 70mm and re-proofed with the eagle J. I guess it later became American war booty, as I bought it at a gun show in El Paso.

Cyrano,
So you're saying the this Eagle over J is period correct?

As for repairs there does not appear to be anything out of sorts.

Would you happen to know what one of these guns plus holster and certificate would go for? Taking into account the cracked grips and Eagle over J.

Thanks for any and all responses,

kobsw

That's the repair proof from the Nazi era.
The later/postwar one has the eagle with the wings in the downward position.

I'd guess a barrel replacement.
The proofs are hard to see, but the Eagle/N at the muzzle looks a little different from the Eagle/N stamp on the slide.
(The new barrel would have received both the repair proof mark AND an Eagle/N proof in a barrel repalcement)

The difference is so very slight but there to my eye.

The only other thing that would demand a reproof on an issue pistol that I can think of would be a slide replacement.
I don't think the firing pin or safey replacement required a reproof,,just test firing. Could be mistaken though.

I had a 1937 PPK with the earlier Crown/R repair mark in the same place. The pistol clearly showed a barrel replacement by way of the cross pin haveing been removed and leaving evidence of it..

The crack(s) in the one piece grip of the prewar PPK is very common. They are seen as evidence of originality. They also warp a bit on the sides. Attempts to repair them makes collectors cringe. Leave them just the way they are.

Great looking holster and magazines. Orig mags with the small 'm/m' caliber marking. Some mags were serial numbered to the pistol, but not all.

Very nice PPK rig,,congrats!

1252hg,
Thanks for the clerification. I presume the barrel was replaced since the Eagle over J is on it. I have not fired the gun nor to expect to since it's not mine but a friends.

However, a funtion check and a look at the gun's like new bore indicates to me that it would shoot just fine.

I know I keep asking this but what would be a good estimate on the price of the gun, holster and paper?

kobsw..

I'd guess that with the condition & being Police marked, the 2 original mags, nicely marked holster and that capture paper it would easily sell for $1500.
I'd think it would bring somewhere closer to $2000 or just under that in an auction.
JMHO

2152hg, you've been a great help. I will let me friend know since she is very much considering selling it.

I appreciate you taking the time.

Have a good one,
