S&W should produce an updated Model 296 in .44 Special and .45 acp. The old Ti cylinder should be replaced by the cylinder (s) used in the new Nightguard product line. These are, I believe, available in .44 Special and .45 acp. The conversion to a stainless steel Nightguard cylinder reportedly adds only 2 ounces to the overall weight of the 296.

The 296 is a Centennial design, .44 Special "L" frame revolver from the "Ti" series. Not everyone was happy with the Ti cylinder and some 296s have been refit with Nightguard cylinders. Forum member Dr. Dremel has had this done and I've seen his 296. It is impressive. I'm going to be sending my 296 back to be refit.

A 296 in .45 acp should be moonclip capable, would be lightweight and have an internal hammer. While larger than a 642, it would offer the effectiveness of the larger caliber.

The Nightguard standard dot front sight should be offered on the updated 296 series guns.

I'm with ya' on all of it!
But, I don't think an L frame would have enough material to turn it into a .45ACP though? If the Nightguard line of cylinders were scarce, I'd bet the 696 cylinder could be used if the owner wanted to have it in a black or S/S finish.
