I purchased this Model 66-2 3 inch revolver a couple of months ago. A friend of mine gave me a factory flash chromed (to look like stainless) "K" frame set of a .500 target hammer and a .500 target grooved trigger. I decided to put them in my Model 66-2 3 inch gun. To finish the gun off, I got another pair of Keith Brown smooth "Hideout" grips made from Black Walnut, with silver factory S&W medallions. I now have two unique 3 inch Model 66's, which are fully dressed up, with Keith Brown grips, with full .500 target hammers and triggers, one with a case colored set, and the other flash chromed.

Sorry but I don't consider this an upgrade, they are your guns but IMO target hammers/triggers do not belong on firearms like 3" 66's. Hope you saved the ones you took off in case you ever decide to sell.

You did good on your 66 IMO. I have the same 3" 66-2 and it is by far my all time favorite S&W.

Congrats and may your collection grow!

i believe both of your triggers are .400" not .500" they stopped that long ago is it stuck out further than the trigger guard

I like it and most importantly, if you like what you have done, its awesome! good for you

Looks like a winner and I'm glad you set it up the way you like it because it's your gun and your money.

I'm sure that it will offend some purist's sensibilities, but I installed a Patridge blade on my Ashland 66-2 back in the '80's when I got it, since it's intended purpose was for the 'undercover match' portion of PPC. (Which it fulfilled quite admirably)

Sorry for the crappy photo - only one I had access to at the moment. The gun is in excellent shape and the photo doesn't do it justice.

As far as your mods . . . it's your gun - do with it as it pleases you. When I bought mine I bought it to use for a specific purpose and I'm glad I didn't know at the time that they would be such a hot item almost 30 years later. If I had I probably would have tried to buy two and put one up in the safe untouched. And even then, I would have babied the used one more than I even usually do and would have been reluctant to use it much since it was so "collectible". Now almost 30 years older, I view that as not fitting my personal outlook on such things these days.

Very very nice! I'm currently waiting on a pair of KB's grips just like your smooth black walnut hideouts for my 2 1/2 inch 19.

How do you like them for shooting?

Model 66 (no dash)

Nice.
What series is the one with case-colored hammer/trigger and diamond grips?

The pinned and recessed gun is a Model 66 (no dash) 6K33XXX serial number range which makes it around 1974. The other is a 1985 Ashland special run 66-2.

Definately .500 size

The triggers are definately .500 in size. The no dash 66 is from 1974, when the .500 triggers were still in production. The trigger on the dash 2 gun are a special batch of flashed chromed .500 size which my friend had ordered prior to the factory changing to the smaller .400 size for the reason you stated. That is why I put them on the dash 2 gun so both guns would have the exact same size hammers and triggers. The P&R no dash had the hammer and trigger already in the gun when I bought it.

Keith Brown Grips vs Craig Spegel Grips "K Frame Round Butt

I really admire the Keith Brown grips and hope to own a pair someday. In the meantime I enjoy these Craig Spegel grips on my 3".

My Model 66-2 originally came with Spegel grips. I prefer the Keith Brown "Hideout" grips because they cover the bottom of the grip frame. The little extra wood makes a big difference in the overall handling of the gun. Spegel grips are great for my "J" frame guns, and I especially like the "Centennial Grip" Craig offers on my Model 940. You can go wrong with either gripmaker as they both offer a terrific product..

FYI, you can order the Spegel boot grips with a longer length to cover the bottom of the grip frame. I want to say it adds 3/8" but I could be wrong.

3 " pinned Md. 66

That 3 " pinned Mdl.66 is one fine and rarer 66. Do you have a factory letter on it, or was it put together by a compitent gunsmith ? The grips really look fanfastic on your 66's. Thank you for showing them on the forum.:)

I wasn't aware that the 3" was made before the dash 2. I have only seen p&r 66's in 2 1/2" then 4" and up. Someone educate me, please!

OK, I can settle which one looks the best. Just send them all to me and I'll photograph and do a detailed comparison for us. All of the ugly guns will be promptly returned to the owner.

I have been looking for a 3" 66 for a long time. No luck yet. Yours are great though.
