Just bought a two-tone (satin aluminum finish frame, black slide) 457 in PERFECT condition, not a single scratch, scuff or wear mark product code 130120. The guy also had it magnaported, and it shoots great! Just wondering if anybody new of the actual value of theis model. Looks like a standard black 457 is around $400-$450 in 90-95% condition but not sure exactly. My buddies and i agreed this gun is 99%. Also found the standard catalog of smith and wesson (page 290) says this gun is two times standard value but does not say what standard value is. This is my second smith (have the 38 special body guard) and love them both! hopefully have some more in the future! Any help on this 457 would be great, especially how to tear it down for cleaning. Couldn't find anything on the Smith website.

Congratulations! You'll find a lot of love here for the 457. I have the stainless version and it's my 2nd favorite pistol (after my 645).

Attaching a value to these old(er) pistols is hard(ish) and depends greatly on where you live. Black ones in 90% plus go for $350-$425 here in FL...if you can find one. I paid $350 for mine, with 3 mags & no box, but had to drive 2 hours to get it. I've seen a 2tone only once and it was about 6mos ago. They were asking $475 and I don't think they got it, the listing expired.

I'm honestly not sure people know what they're looking at when they SEE a 457 (and most Smith semi's). I'd probably pay $500 if it was seriously LNIB...with the box & swag. YMMV, I'm sure others will chime in shortly.

As for how to field-strip:

With the barrel facing left, you will see the "slide-stop assembly". On the other side you will see where the pin comes through.

On the slide is a notch just forward of the assembly. With the mag out, pull the slide back until the notch is over the front part of the slide-stop and hold it there.

Using your right index finger, you should be able to push the pin straight out a little.

;););)STOP RIGHT THERE;);););)

Pull the slide-stop STRAIGHT OUT. Don't let it swing down or you'll scratch the frame.

Remove the barrel and spring like any other semi and go to town. Be advised: That double recoil spring can and will go flying:)

Upon Re-assembly, you'll have the slide on the frame and there are pins that have to be depressed as the slide moves rear-ward.

With the hammer down, proceed to depress each pin until the slide is over it.

Pull the slide back until that notch is over the hole and insert the pin STRAIGHT IN:D.

That procedure works for all 3rd gen S&W semi-autos. You should be able to use any youtube vid for any 3rd gen if you have problems

Hope I helped, enjoy!

Oh, yeah...almost forgot...

I paid $500 for it with both mags and the previous owner had it magnaported which i believe is between $150-$200. I havent seen any of these two tones for sale and i found out that it was made in 97 for Zanders.
I thought that is how it disassembles but that slide stop will NOT budge at all. The gun has very few rounds through it and is still very tight and im not sure that it has ever been apart to be cleaned. i have a '67 la ERMA that comes apart real easy and i cant get this one apart to clean and i really want to clean it!! And im not sure how to post pics up in here

I had to use a wooden golf tee the first couple of times I stripped mine to clean it, six years later it pops right out.

btw nice looking M457

Yep! She is pretty! Mine shoots great w/out the ports. With them, it must be a dream.

As long as you're happy with it, $500 is an outstanding price. It should serve you well for quite some time.

Thats what im going to have to do Chuck. But i wanted to make sure that it was supposed to come out that way and not some stupid half turn or something like that. Local gun shop said it might take some muscle to get it out too. They also said to call Smith and they should be able to give a better idea on the value of the gun and maybe a manual
