Recently picked up a USGI 10-5, with about 50% blue remaining. I have some other USGI revolvers that show evidence of extensive use. My question is, are there DOD regs that specify how much finish-wear that a firearm may be allowed to accumulate , in order to require re-finishing ? Is extensive finish loss or even "pits" , allowable ?

I did a quick perusal of my collection of TMs and FMs for Revolver, Cal., 38 but came up empty. There is a TM that spells out the specs for go-no go (probably TM 9-something) for the different levels of maintenance. There is a TM for everything.

You're describing pure cosmetic wear, nothing mechanical. Some probably couldn't live with such a gun, but it hurts nothing. Shoot it.

Except for brand new weapons, most of the weapons I had in the service were pretty shoddy appearancewise. As long as they worked, everyone was content.
Just before the first series of Berettas started being issued out, our 45's should've been retired long ago. Some had barrels that were more like a Remington 870 or Brown Bess musket...only the Brown Bess was more accurate.
