Group,

I posted this awhile back, i need some one to make me a filler piece of wood. I want to use a set of N frame factory targets on a 625 which is as we know round butt. I need some one with wood working experience to make me one i'll pay what ever you need. Years back there was a member who made some for me put he has not posted in years, does any one who works with wood own a 625 and own a set of sq butt grips to do this. Thanks to all who read my post i did receive several PMs about needing to see the grip ect ect but the sets made for me by the gentleman always fit

Affirmative to all of the above... funny, in that it's something that I've been thinking about doing for myself too.

I'll a look into what it will take to convert a set. I'm assuming that you plan to glue the filler piece in place on one side of the grip panels?

Maybe try using glass bedding material such as is used to bed a rifle stock. I once had some Herrett's Shooting Star stocks that did not properly fit. I used a release agent on the grip frame then applied the glass mix to fill the void, then placed one side of the stock onto the frame. After it set up, I repeated on the other half. As a final step, trim the small edge burrs.

What you want done is not difficult to do, hardly any skill needed.

You can cut the rear corners off of an old pair of rd butt stocks; you can get an old worn pair cheap from ebay or at a gunshow.

File to flatten the checkered sides to half the dimension of the grip strap. Then glue one to the backside of each half of the sq butt grips. Sand them flush to the grips and use Birchwood Casey Tru Oil for a finish.

I guess there might not be any besides the guy you had. It's too simple of a task. Grip makers may just have bigger fish to fry.

You can google and see what comes up.

I recall some round to square butt grips made only for J Frames years ago. The only ones that fit properly were S&W factory combat/oversized but these compromised the concealability of the gun.

Is this what you're after?

If so, maybe you could get whoever has that piece to lay it on some graph paper, take a couple of decent pics and some measurements (width at the bottom, overall height and thickness) and I'll take a stab at it. 2 minutes on the bandsaw should do it.

Probably need a roll pin of some kind to run through it and into the grips.

All I have to work with is oak and cherry for hardwood but stain hides a multitude of sins.

Yes that is what i need someone to make a filler piece the member who made them for me in the past has not been on the forum for years

Conrad,

Thanks for the reply the ones used in the past tightened in place

By tightened in place, do you mean that filler block slipped into place and then the grips are screwed down to hold it there?

I really like Hondo44's idea, that saves having to fabricate a filler piece like what I was going to do, and I'm going to explore that option, instead of having to make something from scratch.

Contact John and Jennifer Culina at Culina Grips. He did a conversion for me years ago and from I understand now has them listed on his webpage. It started when I bought a 629 Mountain Revolver and was unhappy with the fit of the stocks. I contacted John and asked him if he could make a round to square butt conversion, he was happy to oblige and did a beautiful job. I sold the 629 with the Pachmeyers it came with kept the Culina stocks and got into a 24-3 Lew Horton, which is also a round butt frame and installed the conversion stocks on it, couldn't be happier. Nothing fits my hand better than square butt Smith and Wesson target stocks, except John's.

Here is a set of elk that I modified for my Model 28-2 round butted custom revolver. Also a picture of the stocks on the frame. I did NOT fit a sliver on the fore strap as you can see in the photo of the stocks on the photo.
