I have never been much of a fan of Tom Cruise but I think he did a credible performance in the movie "Valkyrie". it is just too bad that this attempt on Hitler and many others failed.

Valkyrie is a good movie. Cruise is a solid actor that does a good job of selling his roles.

Given the historic significance, plus the fact that it is a fascinating story well-told, one should not get too hung up on Tom Cruise.

Many other fine actors, Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, even Eddie Izzard, have larger or smaller roles.

Also, after some initial concerns about trivializing Hollywood fluff and Cruise‘s personal affiliations, the Germans granted access for filming to many of the actual sites, so the film achieves an unusual level of authenticity. That wasn‘t easy, especially regarding the Bendlerblock buildings in Berlin, in 1944 the HQ of the Replacement Army and center of the plot and today part of the German Ministry of Defense.

The man led a charmed life.

The official count is 42 assassination attempts. No wonder some of his followers believed his claims about being protected by Fate.

In the most famous one before Valkyrie, in 1939 a man named Georg Elser planted a bomb in a pub in Munich where Hitler spoke every year. Hitler left early; eight other people died, as would have Hitler had he still been at the podium.

I liked the movie, and Tom Cruse just doesn't make bad movies. One think about the movie was the artificial eye stuff. Whoever directed that portion of the movie obviously didn't know anything about them.

Anthropoid tried its damnedest to put me to sleep, until the last act.

If you liked Anthropoid and Valkyrie, check out Operation Finale. Comedian Nick Kroll knocked it out of the park.

Take a gander at Edge of Tomorrow. Although to be frank, Emily Blunt could have carried a sack of concrete through that film.

And if you like that, go for Elysium, which is admittedly weaker, but a good transition to the gloriously moronic fun of Hardcore Henry.

I watch way too many movies.

My favorite Tom Cruise movie was Risky Business. I personally wish him well, but avoid movies that he is in. No matter what the historical setting, I just see the goofy kid that jumped up and down on Opra's couch.

i'm also not a fan of cruise but he has been in some good movies collateral being my favorite.

I just remembered something, from Mission Impossible 5.

(1) That's actually Tom Cruise.
(2) They didn't CGI the scene, they shot it live and CGI'd a single safety cable out of the shot.
(3) Everyone figured it would be a one-and-done shot, just a single take. Cruise did it eight times.
(4) That scene was shot in the middle of winter.

Visited Berlin last fall, took these photo where the Stauffenberg, his aide(Werner von Haeften)and two other conspirators were shot:

BTW-IMO, they got off easy compared to the other plotters, some of whom were slowly hanged with piano wire-ugly scenes that were filmed for Hitler's perverted pleasure.

(I've been reading a lot about the German resistance-a very sad story. Some of its members were in the highest echelons of the German military; incl. Canaris-the head of the Abwehr(German military Intelligence).
