What is the value of a mid 70's Marlin 39a with very light surface rust on a couple of spots on the barrel and a spot on the receiver where the prior owner tried to use steel wool to remove the surface rust?

I have a gun valued @$500, and the owner of the Marlin wants to do a straight trade. GB values are all across the board so it is hard to gauge the true value.

I watch these and for what you describe $500 would be top end.... Most Sellers on the auction sites are only getting in the $600s for real clean guns. This would be for the standard 24" barrel with pistol grip stock.

Prices seem a little down as I have seen two 60s vintage 20" barrel Carbines sell for $750 and $850 recently. Both were very clean and would have brought over a grand just a year ago or so. I've sold three over the last 5 years and all brought $950 to $1200....

As we all know, condition means a lot and rust and attempted rust repair by a novice hurts value. I sold a similar year 39A at local gun show this year for $650 and it was very clean with no rust.

For what it is worth, I bought a rust free, excellent condition 39A made in the early 1950's for $550 from Collector's Firearms in Houston last year and they are not known for their bargains.

IMHO, $500 is high for the condition you describe. In the last year or so, I have purchased a very nice 39A for $395 and a Mountie carbine in excellent shape for $450.

If your $500 gun is accurately valued, I'd look for a better deal.
