That's definitely not a Model 15-4 Combat Masterpiece. Here's mine from 1981 with stag grips.

Yours looks like an older .38 M&P or pre-model 10, but I'll defer to other forum expertise to say for sure.

The serial number should be very easy to read on the butt (bottom of the handle). What you posted can't be the serial number.

Looks like an all-original M&P from around 1947 or maybe 48 to me. Might be worth a bit more than $450 to some, but not a whole lot more.

The OP's first picture of the yoke-cut clearly shows a stamping of "MOD 15-4"

So why are people saying it isn't a Model 15? Am I missing something here?
Is it all about some kind of SN discrepancy?

FWIW, this is the first time I have seen a k-frame SN with the "K" in the middle - rather than as a prefix. So that certainly seems a bit unusual.

Reminds me of the "floating J" serial numbered J-frames.

IMO, a very interesting revolver with an interesting serial number...

But what do I know?

The OP had originally posted photos of this gun.

He later edited his post.

Yes, it was handled similar to the J frame serial numbers.
S&W made a lot of adjustable sight K frames (Models 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 48, 53....) and they were running out of available numbers. Serial numbers were limited to 7 characters because of their tooling. That's why they switched over the triple alpha series.

Maybe I'm seeing things, but to my eyes, the finish appears to be freckled by corrosion. If that is freckling, I'd say $400 at most.

It is not two different guns and the finish is clean and in excellent shape. It's been fired less than a box of bullets since 1983 when my father gave it to me.

I guess I'm late to this party. Looks like a 15 to me. There does appear to be freckling on the butt. But otherwise, as far as what is pictured, it seems to be in excellent shape. I'd probably pay $500 for that easily and happily. Probably worth more but I'm not in any need. I'd prefer a 67.
