Well I'm going to be giving the accuracy department another go around. I am currently sitting on 2 pounds of Varget and 200 Hornady 168gr BTHP. Anybody try this combo yet and had good results? Hate to waste a good match bullet if it might not be a match for the barrel.

Should be good to go! Look at 2cants thread below! Work up some loads.

The Amax is another option.

Varget and .308 168 gr A-Max gives me sub MOA with my M1A NM. I use lower pressure loads as required for semi auto op rod protection.
The same loading for 168 gr SMK does not give as good result so I'm trying IMR 4895.

Thanks guys, I saw 2cants thread but think that going with 39.5 grains even as a starting load is to far to the low side (under starting) and when shooting outside of shooting groups I believe it may lead to FTF/FTE. I could be wrong though.

Has anyone else out there done load development with Varget and a 168?

What rifle?
What caliber?
Bolt or semi?
Barrel length?
Target distance?
When you choose a bullet, you "waste" them until you find a proper load.

2cants has stated before that he is running MIL brass so backing down a couple grains would not be unusual from my understanding.

I'm going to use imr 8208 xbr with 168 hornady bthp. Lc nato brass. These will be my first reloads for my m&p 10. I thought I might start with 40 grains. I've had good results with my ar 15s using the xbr plus it meters like a dream.

This round runs best out of my rifle in hand loads. I put 4 168 bthp rounds through the same hole, in a 3 in target at 100.. My friends and I were like WHAT THE HELL lol..

I've read that the powder used in the GI Match loads is IMR 4064. I've used VARGET with very satisfactory results with 175 gr Bergers in my bolt gun.

I'd visit one of the LR Rifle forums...should find all sorts of info there.

Not sure how close the Hornady 168 gr BTHP is to Hornady's 168 gr AMAX but I've had very good results with 45 grains of Varget behind the AMAX (with Rem LR primer) in my 20 inch barrel FN 308 bolt rifle (max load according to Hodgdon). Less than MOA at 100 and can cover 3 rounds with my palm at 600 yards. Varget is my go to powder for medium caliber loads. Good luck.

Just reread my snarky previous post. My apologies.
Anyway. I use 42.7gr Varget for the M1A with sub MOA results at 200yds. If you are using a bolt rifle you can go hotter. Although this load is great with the A-Max it does not do so well with SMK's, which is another fine bullet.

I THINK the AMAX is a non-boat tail bullet but I'm not sure.
