I've seen mounted examples of this fish, a Payara, for years, and been impressed with the very long fangs in the lower jaw. When the mouth is closed, they actually protrude through the nostrils...

The language here is probably Brazilian Portugeuse, but the film is universally understandable. BIG teeth!

This fish was featured on Animal Planet's "River Monsters" recently. The host explained that the long fangs were to puncture the swim bladders of its prey preventing them from diving and forcing them to surface and remain there where they could be easily picked off by them. They are nasty looking fish, but they put up a good fight and would probably be a lot of fun to catch. By the way, no...I don't think they would taste like chicken.

Dave

I no longer get Animal Planet, but I think I saw a banner ad for that show on another site.

I do like to watch Shark Week every year on Discovery.

Most South American rivers are full of dangerous denizens. I doubt that many people swim there. If the crocodiles, caimans, anacondas, and piranhas don't get you, the electric eels may!

Being in the water there must be almost as dangerous as driving on US freeways,...

The opposite is true. We carry a thin needle when offshore fishing to puncture the bladder of bottom fish we are releasing. Otherwise the bladder can stay inflated and they can't get back down to bottom.
