It really is amazing how Arbitrary and Discretionary the pistol permit process is New York State, particularly in Westchester County.

The author of the video exposed a judge who denied a woman an unrestricted pistol permit. I give the author lots of credit for digging up public files on Pistol Permit Denials and Revocations/Suspensions.

I think I need to move down South!

May-issue, and restricted based on an elected (for a ten-year term) judge's personal politics. Ugh.

(I moved to a county that's very nearly shall-issue, and I am SO much happier.)

I moved from NYC to Los Angeles in 1988. By comparison, California was a gun enthusiasts heaven (proving the theory of relativity).

Growing up in NYC, in the '70s, only two classes of people were armed: criminals and police. After my mother was robbed at gun point, we went down the the 20th Precinct station to look at mug shots. My father commented that if the lawlessness continued, citizens would eventually arm themselves and start fighting back. The detective was aghast, and replied, "I hope it doesn't come to that." I suppose he had the "oh my God it would be Dodge City" reaction to the idea.

That was the late '70s. Since then, we've seen a revolution in the number of citizens authorized to carry weapons concealed nationwide.

And, despite the conventional "wisdom" of folks warning of the danger of an armed citizenry, there was no Dodge City effect...since Florida led the way in 1988, there have been relatively few permit abuses or crimes by the permit holders...and violent crime has been reduced in those jurisdictions.

It proves, yet again, that the danger is not "what we don't know"...it's what we "know" that turns out to be wrong. It would be a number of years before John Lott's reseach revealed a counter intuitive fact: more guns equals less crime.

Of course, those wedded to the "more guns equals more crime view" will never realize they're wrong. Which proves how people, once vested in a viewpoint, will cling to it, no matter what evidence to the contrary is presented.
