Is there a site that pictures vintage ammo boxes with approx age and info? I like the graphics on the old boxes, and if the price is right, I pick them up now and then. Thanks, Bob

Bananaman,

Determining the age of old ammo boxes is a very difficult thing to pin down. Lots of company mergers and moves. Very subtle changes. Old magazines and catalogs are your best bet.

There are lots of threads on this forum if you do a thorough search.

What Bob said. There is a guy that is an expert on Winchester boxes (Geist?) that has a book out.
You can also post pics here and we may be able to narrow an age down by stuff we have.

Second the motion of posting pictures and asking questions.

One simple and easy indicator I picked up is to look for a zip code in the company address on the box. If there is a zip code, the box was made after 1963.

There's a thread running right now that links out to an ammo collectors web site. Its got pictures of the kind of boxes and gives approximate ages for the boxes. Its not exact, but its pretty darn good. I did bookmark the site, but its probably easier to look in either the older revolvers section or the lounge (I forget witch) and go look at the site yourselves.

Try this, as stolen from the 32 Wadcutter thread:

That's a great link, Dick. Thanks for posting it.

29aholic,

The book that you made reference to is: One Hundred Years of Winchester Cartridge Boxes 1856-1956 by Ray T. Giles & Daniel L. Shuey

The Giles book and the link that Dick gave are probably the best ID's for Remington and Winchester boxes that I know of.
