Vintage Ohaus 10-0-5 scale zero

More on the Vintage Ohaus 10-0-5 scale. The pan holder was boogered a tad so I called RCBS thinking to buy a replacement, but they sent me one for free. Great company. But I dumped out the shot to start to zero and turns out that the empty holder is about 50 grains heavier than zero. Any ideas on how to get zero with this situation?

If the replacement pan holder is 50 grains heavier than zero without the shot in it (you removed the shot from it, correct?), it sounds like the pan holder is not the correct one. You could add weight to the tip of the arm (pointer), but 50 grains seems like a rather large discrepancy to overcome.

otherwise there is going to be a lot of filing to be done and that pan will not be as deep any more !

Have you tried adjusting the zero? the one leg that's moveable is for that purpose. What you're doing is putting the scale in a different position by turning the knob. Or you could put a shim under the single leg if there's not enough thread left (but there should be).
