Thank you for your recent message expressing support for my decision to join more than 30 attorneys general around the country in signing on to the amicus brief in NRA v. Chicago, defending the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
I have been receiving a tremendous amount of correspondence on this topic, and appreciate the opportunity to provide a bit of background information on what went into the decision.
As you know, the right of the people to keep and bear arms guaranteed in the Second Amendment applies to federal laws regulating firearms. The brief argues that the Second Amendment should also apply to state and local laws in the same way that other rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion, apply to state and local laws.
