You guys are killing me. I keep seeing these posts about you all that bought ammo from Walmart. Where and when did they start doing that?! I live in PA and never seen ammo in there. I go to Dicks or something like a sports store, or the gun place. Wow.

From what I've gathered over time, Walmart's market research tells them what will sell well/be well received in any given area, and will offer those items in that area. Stores in other areas will offer other items. Of course the bulk of what they stock will be consistent in stores across the country.

Regards,
Andy

Wal-Mart's are different.

I have one that sells RIFLES/SHOTGUNS/AMMO.

They sell BEER/WINE TOO, Probably not in your PA ones though.

The Walmart close to me used to sell ammo, but the selection was pitiful and I never bought from them. I do not think they sold much. They quit selling it here about ten years ago.

I can remember when the only place near where I lived that sold guns and ammo was the hardware store..
50 cents a box for .22 rimfire.. at age 10!
On the way back I would stop and get a pack of cigarettes for 25 cents.. for less than a dollar, I could really do some smoking! :D

I have about seven Wallys within about 15 miles from me. All of them sell ammo. Just looked and they have limited stocks of Federal .45, some 9mm but are out of .22 right now. They seem to have the .45 in 50 rd boxes all the time but I usually wait for the 100 rd box. Cheaper. 9mm not too bad to find. .22 are hit and miss. Sometimes 3 or 4 stores have them in stock but right now, nothing. That's OK. Last month I hit 3 stores in two days and stocked up on a couple of thousand rds. :):)

-All of the Wal-Marts near me sell ammo too. Well, if it's in stock, that is. One about 15 minutes down the road also sells shotguns through centerfire rifles. No handguns at any of them, but I doubt if they ever will sell them...

I assume you are making a point regarding actually finding any ammo at Walmarts?...The stores in my area have display cases that have shelves with labels that imply they sell ammo but there is almost none in them...Sort of like the meat selection in the state food stores of the old Soviet Union...Very little there and what there is isn't very appealing...Scraps

In MA it's town by town becaue of the way that licensing to sell ammunition works.

In most other states at least the "Super Walmarts" sell ammunition. Some sell long guns as well.

When Sam Walton ran the place they sold firearms and ammunition as a means to get men in to the store. Those items were loss leaders, just to draw traffic.

In 2007, Walmart hired a former Clinton PR guy to be in charge of marketing. He decided to try to take the company upscale and guns were not on the list of item.

Upscale Walmart, imagine that.

It went over like the proverbial lead balloon, and about four years ago, they decided to go back to their roots and start selling firearms again, as well as other hunting and shooting related items.

I don't know why the stores near you don't sell ammunition, but most stores I've been in outside of MA do.

Right now selection is very iffy. Generally prices are competitive, but one of their buyers must have goofed a while back because for the past month or so they've had some pricey Turkish imported 5.56 and 7.62 ammo sitting on shelves.

There's a rumor that the St Cloud WalMart sells ammo. Sometimes when I'm buying soap and motor oil, I'll wheel my cart past the counter. Don't matter, day or night, there's 2 dozen guys milling around aimlessly picking up stuff and putting it down. Can't be ammo they're waiting for, outside of 12 ga shotshells and some rifle calibers that ain't .223 or .308, I haven't seen anything that fits in any gun I own. Joe

I have 3 Walmarts within 10 miles. They used to sell ammo a few years ago but they must have stopped. The shelves are still there but no ammo. I think Walmart is just claiming to have ammo hoping we'll pick up something else on our way out.

The Walmarts near me sell ammo. They just don't know they do. Seriously. If I had a nickel for every blank stare I got when asking a Walmart employee if they had any 5.56 ammo I'd be able to buy another AR.

Now, on a positive note, using the "AP" found here on S&W forums to search Walmart's inventory, I was shocked to see Federal 5.56 420 round 62gr cans in stock at a local store. After calling and describing the can to the employee down to the color, handle, white sticker and zip tie, he confirmed that he did have them in stock and added "Huh, I never seen these before".

So I went over and picked some up. At 199.97 it sure is better than Gander Mountain's "sale" price of $249.00

For the record, Walmart also had 55 grain too in ammo cans for the same price.

I'm Done...

...with that company, especially since I recently learned that the owner cut a huge check to a certain woman who is "considering" running for The Pinnacle of Power in 2016. They never had any ammo there anyway.

A few years back while in Billings Montana I bought powder and other loading supplies at a wallyworld. They had some great prices.

I think most, but not all here in Ga. sell ammo and long guns.

The Wally worlds in my area all sell ammo. The last time I was in Cody,I bought a couple lbs of Unique at their Walmart.

-About four weeks ago I was walking through one of the Wal-Marts near me. Went through the sporting goods section, and low and behold, .22LR on the shelf!! Still had the 3 box limit for every customer though. So I picked up three boxes of American Eagle high velocity for $2.47 each! Yep! Less than $8.00 for 150 rounds!

All of them sell ammo here, I just picked up a box of .45 and skipped the last two 100 rd boxes of 9mm.

Wow this was very interesting to read all of you'lls posts. Well, since I was not even interested in ammo till now and never really looked to see if they carried it. I will go and check it out. In the sporting good section. I will look on line too, that might be interesting
