My current EDC weapon is a Walther PPK/S, .380. Several reasons, but, mostly I really like the SA/DA versatility. I like the "safety" factor of having the first round DA and the ease of all follow up shots being SA. I also like the exposed hammer and its ability to make the first round SA if time and desire permit. Its size and weight are ideal and very easy to conceal.

Now the question: If I wanted to step up to a 9mm with all of the same features/benefits of my Walther that I really like, what would you recommend?

Open sheet of paper, no pre-conceived notions other than I wouldn't carry a KelTec if it was the last gun on earth. (Very long story)

So, what say you?

In the 80s my Suit Gun was a PPK/s and then a PPK....... I switched to a 3913 in 89/90 and have never looked back.

Edit.... looking at your criteria ... you can add a full hammer from a 5900series to a 39/13or14.... to give you first round single action. I have one of my 3913s set up this way and really like it; though I generally carry a 3913NL.

I really dislike DA/SA in a semi-auto, EXCEPT for pocket guns. That's why I'm considering a .380 PPK, if I can find a new blued one (apparently VERY hard to get).

You might want to think about a Walther PPS. They're quite thin, albeit a little tall. They're the "safe action" type I believe, rather than DA/SA.

Other than that, you might want to think about something from Kahr or a Ruger LC9.

No hammer or single action on the LC9.
The new ones are striker fired though with a better trigger.

My 2 options for a "modern" PPK in 9mm have been a Sig P239-9 and a Kahr K9.

I'll admit that the 239 is getting a bit big for small-9 duty, but it's one of the best DA/SA single stacks that I've ever owned.

The K9 (and the P9) to me are the perfect size weight and balance for this class of pistol - if you don't mind the very long DA only trigger pull. The K9 sees most of my 9mm carry time.

I really want to like the PPS and the Shield, but several things about them have been rubbing me the wrong way. 1- the barrels are about 1/2" shorter than the Kahr or Sig (~3.5" vs ~3.1"). 2- they are very tall (compared to the K9). 3- I hate the way the 7 and 8 shot mags have those gigantic finger rests hanging off the bottom. That would drive me nuts for belt or pocket carry of a spare mag. 4- even though they are really thin, they are not small pistols. I think they are very close in height and length to a Glock 26 - honestly, I'd rather carry a double stack if that's the case.

I guess I still haven't found the ideal pistol to fit this bill, but the K9 and then the 239 have come the closest. The 3913 would be another great option, if they were still in production.

YMMV

Kimber Solo might be worth looking into. It's 9mm and roughly the same size and weight of the PPK I think.

How about a CZ 2075 RAMI BD? They're chubby, but meet all of your requirements.

Second vote for the RAMI. They are a little thick, but very accurate, soft shooting, and I have no problem concealing mine IWB.

PPK have been scarce in my area (north Louisiana) for quite a while - blued or stainless, but the blued one terribly scarce. I ran across one this past Monday in Bass Pro Shops. Bought it then and there! Price was not good - not terrible - but not good. It was available then and there though. No other gun shop in the area could get one.

It is big, but a Beretta 92FS has the same manual of arms as a PPK/S.

Yeah, I like the Beretta but it's a bit large. So far, the Rami appears to be closest to what I am looking for.

I carry my Beretta 92fs quite often and do like the DA/SA. I was looking a a Beretta PX4 Storm subcompact. It has a DA/SA just like the 92fs in a smaller package.

If you can find one ....... Beretta 92 Compact Type M.

A 4.25 inch barrel vs. 4.9 on a full size and a short single stack( 8rd) magazine.

or there are "new" 92 Compacts out there w/ 13 rd. magazines.

Also while I recommend the 3913 (8+1) earlier; I should have also mentioned the double stacked 6906/04 with 12round magazines.

If you want to stick with an all steel gun, then you could look into the CZ 75 B Compact. DA/SA. Has the exposed hammer.

A 9mm in that PPK/S configuration with the DA/SA, hammer fired, and especially in a single stack - I don't think that exists. Only the double stack type unless you go for a polymer gun without the exposed hammer.

You could get one, think: Shield, with a manual safety instead of the long DA trigger. The LC9 has both the DA and the manual safety. Most of them are SA only without the manual safety...well, the XDS has the grip safety and it's single stack, SA.

I 'replaced' my PPK/s with a 638, but as far as pistols go, I agree with jlanecole, CZ 2075 RAMI BD, it's what I carry when I'd like to have more rounds aboard.

I'll accept that the OP has his preferences for DA/SA .

In a single stack - 3913 w/ on safe option , Sig P239 w/o.

For double stack , it all depends on how big counts for you as "close to a PPK/s " .

The p239 is a fine choice. It is by no means tiny, but it is easy to shoot and carries well IWB. I have had the 357sig/40 S&W version. They are well built and robust.

Good luck in your search......you might be able to find a PP Super in 9x18 Ultra. It is bigger than the 380 version and the ammo is not in every store, but it is the same pattern as the Walther that you currently have. I had one, but it didn't work for my big mitts (the frame has a curved finger rest at the bottom that bunched my hands up and it wasn't working for me.

For the specific desire of a DA/SA gun I would opt for the Sig 239 in 9mm. The 3913 is an excellent pistol to be sure but unfortunately, it no longer has the parts support or accessory/holster availability that would give it the edge in the decision. The Sig has all of those for that pistol and there are more than a few factory trained Sig armorers for the legacy pistols available.

Too many good choices...

P239s are awsome and in current production.

The 3913/14 are bit smaller and out of production, but mags are still on the market, with holster options aplently if you use a small custom maker like Lobo.

I also have an exceptional 92 Compact Type M, but they are very rare and extra mags are coveted.

Whatever you do, DONT make the mistake of falling for the poly/striker gun hype.
