Washington and Oregon

You can find out all you need to know on the website linked here:Handgunlaw.us

Other than this there are so many different different "it depends" for anyone to give you an answer. Nothing anyone posts on this forum has any legal validity! there is no simple yes or no answer. You need to do your own research!

So, yes you can, but if you do not abide by the laws of each state you visit or pass through you also can be in a lot of trouble, including losing your gun and going to jail!

Oregon does not allow concealed carry except with an Oregon permit. No reciprocity. Nor does WA have reciprocity with TX. So, concealed carry is pretty much out. I do believe car carry is fine, but check WAs mag limit law to see whether it's in effect this week. That might limit your choice of blaster. Oregon's mag limit law was struck down, last I heard.

Edit: It is illegal in WA to carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle unless you have a concealed carry permit, plus a couple other further stipulations. I would study this one closely. Didn't use to be like that in Oregon, but there could be a law I don't know about. I'd research this one too.

Going to spend a few days in Washington and will drive through Oregon. Can I bring my handgun?

That's a broad question. Other folks are assuming you wish to carry concealed. You are asking only if you can bring your handgun.

In Washington, yes. You can have your unloaded handgun with you. Simple possession isn't an issue if you're of age and not a prohibited person. That's not to say you can carry concealed unless you have a permit from a state Washington has reciprocity with. That's also not saying you can keep it in your car loaded. Open carry is legal in Washington. I don't know if that applies to non-residents though. You might get some unwanted attention depending on where you are open carrying. I wouldn't do it in downtown Seattle, for example. Heck, I wouldn't go downtown for any reason if I can help it.

Are you flying? If so, then "can I bring my handgun" has an altogether different answer. You'd want to look up regulations on that question.

Yeah, this is a long answer that could be summarized as "it depends." We could do better if we knew more details of your plans.

Thanks for the responses. I am driving. Just want to bring a revolver. Spending one night in Spokane. Staying at a resort in Ocean Park, WA for a few days. Will pass through Oregon but will not spend the night.
Just thought we probably have some Washington and Oregon residents that would be up on the laws.

If you are LEOSA Qual why not. I did last spring.

In Portland apparently they do a lot of protests. We just missed one and the day after we left they had another.

The states have sites where you can look up the code yourself, do not risk your freedom by getting this information in a chatroom.
Washington and Oregon aren't too bad but are losing rights with regularity.
I could tell you as best I could but if I'm wrong, misspeak or you misunderstand it will be your problem.

Some things, like Washington's new magazine capacity law, are written in a manner to be open to interpretation. When the term 'no importation' is used, it refers to the prohibition of bringing certain items into a jurisdiction. This could mean that a resident is not allowed to purchase an item in Idaho and then bring it back to their home state. It may also imply that one cannot possess the item when crossing state lines during a road trip.

I’m sure you’ve mapped it out.

I-5 north. Just north of Wilsonville, Or. Take 205 to I-84 eastbound. Completely bypass downtown Portland.

From 84 go north to I-82. Then I90 east.

The less time you spend in western Oregon or Washington, the better off you’ll be.

There are a few nice fruit stands on 82.

The Washington and Oregon permit thing really pisses me off. I've had a WA one since '94? and I now have a non-resident Arizona one for a combo of over 35+ states with reciprocity. Yet, I'm not covered in OR.

I only travel out of state with 10rd magazines. One reason I got a Taurus G2C in .40 for cargo shorts carry.

Oregon will issue them to Washington residents.
Take an approved class and state a valid reason. Self defense and sporting purposes should be good.

You can bring it. You cannot carry loaded and concealed without a Washington CPL or another they accept. Likewise loaded in a vehicle. Otherwise you should be ok, at least on the east side of the mountains (MP 52 on I90). You can and should apply for a non-resident CPL while you are passing through; I collect them myself. It won't be issued immediately, but it would eventually get mailed to you.

Stop at the Kittitas County SO Office on Umptanum (X109 from I90, turn right at the end of the ramp, turn left at the next light, just past the Best Western on the right side). My office used to be in that building; now we are north of the courthouse a couple of blocks. I am the least lawyerly person you will ever see, I suspect. I usually look like an escapee from Public Works.

I'll admit, I almost never go west of MP 52 unless it is for work. Too many problems. Most of the core west side areas (King, Snohomish, Pierce counties are excremental - literally.)

One detail to note...

..is that 'loaded firearm' in WA state means:

  • Revolver: one single live round in cylinder.
  • Pistol: one single round in mag and mag inserted in pistol.
  • Shotgun: one single round in tube or mag.
  • Rifle: one single round in mag.
  • Percussion muzzleloader: one chamber is capped (otherwise they can be loaded, just no caps).
Rifles and shotguns cannot be carried loaded in a vehicle not even with a CPL.

If you decide to carry revolver, keep it unloaded with speed loader handy while on the road. Load it while inside the hotel room. If you decide to bring a pistol, the mag capacity import ban does not apply to you as a non-resident just passing through.

Planning on keeping the revolver unloaded in my truck. Locked in the glove box. Ammo in the console.
As I have read what I can about the laws I think that will be ok.
Of course the law is pretty complicated and difficult reading.
Hoping for local knowledge.
Also may call a couple of police departments in Oregon and Washington and ask them.
