To get right to my point: What a bizarre way to celebrate the opening of the Summer Olympics! What the hell was the dancing nurses and bouncing children on hospital beds supposed to relate to? Is that what socialized medicine looks like!!!!!!! Or the capitalist pig BIG Boss strutting around chewing his cigar while his workers were sweating and toiling while the fat cats laughed! How about the invasion of the Mary Poppins!!!! Can you say weird! I’d did think the queen parachuting in was funny and the boat delivering the flame was cool. However, I felt it was BORING! It was so slow moving we watched the movie Robin Hood (for the 20th time) by flipping back and forth and I didn't miss a thing!!!!!!! Technically the logistics were fantastic, but maybe someone should have read the Danny Boyle’s script to make certain that it wasn't going to be a production of the ravings of a lunatic!
The parade of nations was almost as agonizing- watching the people take pictures of themselves!
Have a good day ;~)

Good thing the announcers on TV had a script so they could explain the artist's "vision." The folks in the stands must have been very confused...

I was reading an article on the opening festivities that the guy who put it together was a full on socialist and that the dancing nurses and the kids in beds were part of his view of socialized medicine. I think the only real big issue I heard today was that Israel was not given a moment of silence being this is the anniversary of Munich because the IOC said they don't do moments of silence for anything, then they did one for the London subway bombing victims.

There are many news articles available that "explain" the ceremonies, from recognition of the industrial revolution to the Brits great pride in their health system and children's literature. Maybe it was not how we would have portrayed it, but then it isn't our Olympics either, is it?

Didn't quite make it to the U.S. marching in. Close. I remember Uganda. Kept nodding off. Decided I Just couldn't stand the commercials & gave up.

It was on NBC...I don't watch NBC. From what I have read the opening ceremonies were in a round about way promoting the NHS of Britain. If you don't know what that is simply do a Google or Yahoo search. It will give you some idea of the future of America's health care system. So much for an unbiased, non-political Olympics........

See, I made a bet with my wife that a whole bunch of Americans would tune out when the NHS part came on because we don't understand its role in THEIR society. Or that all the proceeds from the Peter Pan author goes to fund the children's hospital which was represented [recall the nightmares popping up from Brit children's literature]

I just kept hoping that Lauer and Costas would shut up for five minutes, especially all their little rude jokes as they laughed at nation names and pronunciation.

So with the events...I am streaming BBC via proxy. They don't yammer.

The wife and I agreed it was a "Now for something completely different" kind of thing. We didn't make it to the bitter end.

I missed it??? I was busy watching Death Wish II for the umpteenth time. I'm already tired of NBC's incessant rambling. Just let us watch the games and shut up!

+1 i'll second that!

If someone had no prior knowledge of the UK and just watched the opening ceremony, they would have two big takeaways:

1) Their leader is an old lady who jumps out of helicopters.
2) They like to scare sick little kids who are trying to sleep.

Are they kidding????

Thirteen Billion dollars, yes $13 BILLION to put on the Olympics. Arrrrrg! See what happens when you drink too much warm beer.

I still have liked the Italian Winter Olympics opener best but that had a Ferrari. Funny the Mini in the opener is the most popular German car made in Britain.
