Wayward Cylinder Bolt

I have a Mod 28-2 serial N44392 that has had me mystified for some time. I finally established that the cylinder bolt sometimes works forward, blocking the hammer. I can find no apparent cause - no burrs, just the usual tool marks in the channel. The channel is deep enough that the bolt will not enter the recoil shield while resting on the bottom, but once entered is still below the top of the channel.

My problem now is what to do about it. My first impulse is to snip a coil or two from the tiny spring that loads the bolt foreward on the theory that the bolt spring is losing the battle with the springs inside the cylinder. But I sure would admire to have some knowlegeable advice before I snip.

FWIW I notice the thumb latch has worn a small spot in the blue where one rear corner rubs the frame. I have also thought I might relieve that a bit.

Thanks for any help.

Pick up some extra springs. I would replace the opposing spring in the cylinder rod first(center pin spring as mentioned), then try a shorter spring in the bolt. If you have spare springs, you can un-do anything you do if needed.

Try WTB here first. S&W should have them, as will Midway and Brownells.

I keep some for K frames, but I don't have any N frames.

Your gun may have the wrong center pin spring in it. Try stretching it and putting it back in. But I would order a new correct spring.

Yes, I'd dress down (relieve) the thumpiece corner rubbing the frame but I do not feel that it contributes to the problem.

There is also the detent spring that locks the front of the ejector rod when the cylinder is closed.

Check the tip of the center pin. The end that pushes the locking bolt clear of the ejector rod. Sometimes that end of the center pin mushrooms and hangs in the ejector rod and results in the cylinder bolt not being pushed back. It can cause the problem you're describing.
