I recently had a post about my Weatherby Vanguard and got some great comments and replies. In that post I mentioned that I had just won an auction for a Weatherby Mark V in 270 weatherby magnum and was waiting for its arrival. I was actually searching gunbroker to buy an iconic Browning Belgium safari grade rifle when I came across the mark v in its last day of auction with a $650 reserve and no bidders. The gun is from Texas with an H133695 serial so its from 1983 and has seen some serious hunting in it's day but at the price point I could not resist bidding. Low and behold I won auction as the only bidder. I lucked out on it as the Redfield 2-7 scope on Buehler bases is in perfect condition and with some elbow grease the gun cleaned up pretty nicely. Weatherby ammo is expensive but again I lucked out with a nearby pawn shop having 3 boxes of 80's 150 grain ammo he sold all 3 for $75 out the door. Im still looking into setting up a hog hunt here in Florida and found out they will take 2 people out for 2 hogs for $300. So just been talking to people to get second hunter because they charge the same $300 to take just 1 person out for a hog. August is not the best weather here either being its hot, humid and rains daily. Maybe next month. Thanks for looking and any mark V tips are appreciated.

My only tip would be to wear a shoulder pad even with that nice looking recoil pad on the rifle. The specs of that cartridge are stout.

Classic rifle chambered for a great round! Japanese rifles (H prefix) typically had nicer wood than the earlier German guns.

Make sure the action screws are tight. Wood can shrink over time and you can split the stock if the screws are loose.

Only tip is reload and find brass cheap.
I have a 257 and 300.

I do reload and the 3 boxes of ammo I found will work for some brass to start with once it's shot, trimmed. I have a 7mm Remington magnum also and noticed in the book that the powder for 7mm mag also is very good 270 WM. too. 4 pounds of IMR 7828 should last me awhile.

I load 338 Lapua Mag. 94 grains of Retumbo to 104 grains US869, eats powder like crazy! I looked on Hodgeon's loading sight and 270 Wby Mag only uses 72-78 grains of 7828. Say 97-98 rounds a pound.

I have a 60's 264 Win Mag, and it uses around 59-71 grains of H 4831. They have similar performance and a word of caution; the noise and muzzel blast are both FIERCE! The performance of these rounds runs from varmints to medium sized dear at long distance. In 1975 my brother nailed a running antelope at around 550 yards. Not many cartridges will allow you to do that!

I found the Japanese Mark V's the be very stable platforms over time. My farmhouse was a mess when it came to wood stock stability, yet my Vanguards and Mark V (375 H&H) stayed sighted in year after year! The steel bedding blocks and wriest rod added a lot to the bedding!

There was a company that made padded covers for Mark V's to protect the beautiful stocks from getting scratched up! (I have a cheap synthetic stock, but the gun wouldn't group with the garbage stock on!)

I used to collect custom German Weatherby Mark Vs and can tell you that Japanese mfg’d Mark Vs are fine guns. The 270 Wby is arguably my favorite cartridge.
