I have several scoped rifles (and the ones that are not scoped were at one time or another). I have always had great luck with the cheaper Bushnell Banner scopes. On my main rifle, I have a Nikon Monarch 5-20X44,but I don't want to spend that kind of money again. It has more use than I need (although I do enjoy it).

I want to stay around the $100-125 mark on this purchase for my new .243. I came upon this number because that's the amount that my Overtime check will cover after the rifle is bought. (I only buy myself "toys" with OT money and leave the household budget alone). Of course, I thought of the Bushnell Banners, but then I ran across the Weaver Kaspa line. In particular, I was looking at this one that Midway has on sale: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/139163/weaver-kaspa-rifle-scope-3-12x-50mm-dual-x-reticle-matte.

I already have spare rings for medium and high mounts, so I know I'd be set for that big objective.

The Bushnell scopes that go out to 12 or 14 power have a big ugly parallax adjustment ring on the objective. I don't like the looks and would rather stay away from that unless y'all say it is a really nice feature to have.

The price of the 4-12 or 4-14 power Bushnell Banner scopes are in the ball park of the on sale Weaver.

The only other scope I am considering of a lower power (regular 3-9X) is this one: http://www.natchezss.com/brand.cfm?... XLT 3-9x40 Riflescope Circle-X Reticle Matte. The reasoning behind this is that I really like the Circle X reticle. I'd like a bit more magnification, but they don't make one with that reticle in a higher power scope. I also don't know anything about the "Trophy" line of Bushnell.

I did consider a Simmons 44 mag 4-14X44 scope with side adjustable parallax; however, it seems that Simmons scopes are consistently getting bad reps (despite also being owned by the same parent company as Bushnell).

So, thoughts? Opinions? And no, I'm not going to spend the extra on a plinking rifle that I already shouldn't be buying. This is Overtime check money that I have allotted to this and I don't want to dip into the household budget on anything else. With the cost of the rifle, I have around $130 extra to play with and don't want to spend any more. I most likely will shoot a couple boxes of ammo though this gun and put it in the safe until my 1 year old gets old enough to hunt with me. At that time, I will likely upgrade the optics and relegate the cheap scope to my 17 hmr or a 22.

I have always like Weaver optics BUT I know nothing about this Kaspa line which as advertised is a "cost cutting" model.

From the two you posted I would get the Bushnell. They are fine.

Plus you get a $25 rebate

I'm not familiar that line of scopes. Have you looked at the Redfield line? They are made by Leupold now and have a good rep. My personal preference would be to save up and buy the better scope. I have had Bushnell and they were O.K. but I found the cross hairs to be so thick I couldn't get good sight pictures at any distance. I shoot smaller targets, such as Prarie Dogs.

The price range you mentioned puts considerable restrictions on the quality of glass you will end up with but here are some suggestions. If possible go to a store that has some of these models in daylight and look through them to make a comparison.
Read as many reviews on line for these models as you can find.
And remember that a fixed power scope will usually get you better quality for the money than a variable since it requires fewer moving parts.
Good luck.

Slightly more than the $125 you mention, but.....

I like the Bushnell Elite 3200 scopes so well that I have them on three rifles. The Japanese Weaver Classic line ain't bad either...got those on four rifles.

Of course Leupold is great but my Vari-X III seems to be no better than the 3200's. I've got too many rifles and also have some of the Denver Redfields, etc., etc.

If I was buying another scope today it would a Bushnell Elite 3200. The "Rainguard" coating they have really works.

Here's an Elite 3200 on a Remington 700 .30-'06...tied down with a Game Reaper DNZ mount.

I understand those that are pushing me to a nicer scope... But in all reality, once I sight this gun in and develope an accuarte hand load for it then it will most likely be put in the back of my gun safe until my 1 year old is big enough to hunt with it. When that comes aroind, I'm sure I will invest in a good youth sized wood stock (Boyd's) for the extra weight and a better glass.

Until then, it is hard for nme to justify buying an optic that isn't exactly what I want (another Monarch 5-20 X 44 w/ BDC). The scope I buy will likely be going on a 22 lr soon enough.

With that in mind, I went ahead and got the Bushnell 3-9 with the circle X recticle. I like the reticle and it would serve well on a coyote gun (should I keep it on the 243) or on a squirrel gun.
