Today I went shopping for a present for my wife's birthday this Saturday. I went to the same jewelry store we've been using since we pick out the engagement ring in September 1977. I got her two pair of very nice ear rings, one for her birthday and one for Christmas (unless I need a diversion for a gun purchase!) I also picked up two very nice Swiss Army Knives for myself. Everything totaled just below $1200 with tax.
While I was waiting for the gift wrapping to be completed, I was strolling around the engagement and bridal rings. I saw the non valuable size and style sampler sitting out and fitted myself with the size 11.5 sample I saw the style of my original ring. That got me to thinking: We gave our rings to friends that were being sued by the State of Michigan for having a Church/School in 1979. I replaced the rings about a year to eighteen months later and lost it within a few weeks, replaced that one and lost it a month or two latter. I gave up on me wearing a ring, and didn't think about it until about two years ago. I didn't want to appear to be an old dude hiding the fact that I was married from young and nubile ladies! I ask a pawn shop to keep an eye out for a replacement, but they just scrap everything that comes in the door.
That brings me to this afternoon. My first ring was paid for by my bride, $62, he band was $39. When I bought the replacements a few years later 1980/81, they were just over double the original prices. ($143 & $84). The ring I priced today is a white gold 6mm band with milled edges. The first price they gave me was $6200, but that was for platinum. The same band in white gold was ONLY $1500 + tax!
I will continue to walk the land with a naked left hand!
