An all time classic right up there with fear and loathing in Las Vegas...
Like him or hate him, Hunter Thompson was .....memorable
I just took down the link to Hunter Thompson's classic screed about the Kentucky Derby-one which I have posted for years on Derby weekend to good reviews from the forum. Why? Because it contains the N word twice and I am afraid I'll get dinged for it.....Changing times :(

I've always treasured Groucho's comment about horse races being horse drawn vacuum cleaners (of the wallet).

Only saw it once in person.
We drove down after a long night in Vevay, Indiana.
Parked in a front yard and headed for the infield.
When it was finally Derby time most of my group were asleep in the parking lot front yard.

I look forward to the derby the same way as I look forward to sex with the wife--wait a whole year for something, a lot of build up for the big event the week before, and it's over in three minutes.

Only horse race I ever went to was the Jim Beam Stakes.

When I started working at the news paper plant that printed the Hamilton, and Middletown daily papers. I started on second shift.

Only thing we printed was The Daily Racing Form.

Three minutes? Haven’t seen those kinda numbers since I was a yute :D

The Derby is just another unidirectional sport. Until they start going clockwise, I’ll stick to watching the cooking channel. Yawn

All kidding aside, I hope the Derby lasts another 100+ years. I am surprised the woke and PETA haven’t shut it down for some cockamamie reason.

A friend of mine from college grew up right across the street from Churchill Downs. The neighborhood kids had a hole in the fence they could crawl through. He claims to have never missed a Derby during his youth and swears he never actually saw a horse on the track!

Just re-read Hunter Thompson’s take on the Derby circa 1970… been years since I’d read it and still laughing! Thanks for the reminder, Caj! It’s worth Googling!
