Well I went to Academy to get some bore solvent, and walked out with a brand new Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle in 5.56 NATO. While I always liked this rifle, it was never in my radar due to high price tag. However, I saw one on clearance sale for almost 50% off the thousand dollar price tag, and after handeling her I could not let that deal go. While I would have perefered a scout rifle in 7.62 rather than 5.56, I must say this is one of the most comfortable and versatile rifles I have ever come across. Living in South Lousiana, I reckon the 5.56 is plenty for most uses down here. It has been along time since I had a good bolt action, and already this rifle has rejuvanated my love for a good bolt gun. She feels great and has awesome peep sights. Anyone else like these dandy little rifles?

Yes Sir, good grab! I think you are going to like it,I sure like mine in .308 Win. I have the 2.75X Burris Scout Scope out front just as Col. Cooper said it should be and off the sand bags using my handload with a Sierra 165gr GameKing it shoots very well. Wait for the Ruger polymer mag's, they work very well for the .308 and you can top em off in the rifle from the top as the mag lips will spring so you can push a cartridge into the mag. Enjoy that one!

Walking into a gun shop for one little thing,is akin to walking into a bakery for just a cup of coffee,or walking into a pizza place for just one slice.

I do like those...
BUT - I have a c.1969 Remington M788 in .223 that is just too fun to shoot. Hard to take on another bolt gun in .223/5.56.
Enjoy!

Thanks fellas, this is the first time I got a real steal of a deal on a gun. Usually the guns on clearance I come across are 100 bucks off a 300 dollar low end import brand. I did notice the mags are expensive but they seem very high quality; though I do hope they make the polmyer mags soon in 5.56 as they do the 7.62 model.

Of course, some of my friends will rib me for buying an old style bolt gun over a similar priced AR, but it is hard to explain in words just how good she feels. The short barrel and short stock fit me as if it were handfitted for me, and the peep sights have always allowed me to shoot my best with a rifle. Reminds me of the old Enfield Jungle Carbine. Taffin always writes about the "perfect packing pistol", well this gun may earn the title of perfect packing rifle, right at home at the campsite or in the boat/canoe/truck. Makes me want to buy a companion wheelgun to match it, perhaps a 3-inch GP100 or SP101. I would even argue a Blackhawk but I need it to double as a CCW.

My favorite "Walking in Penn's Woods" rifle is my CZ 452/FS(mannlicher) in .22 mag....light weight and just enough gun for Pa. four legged varmints; out to 100-150 yds.

I looked at the Ruger Scout but the "huge"& expensive proprietary magazines turned me off.... but the little Ruger 77/357 with a 1-3x20 Weaver scope is a great little stainless rifle and fulfills my cabin utility rifle needs....

But at $600......that Scout was too good a deal to beat ...... well unless you had CajunLawyer's buying experience....

About 2 years ago I got a CZ 527/FS in .223/5.56; again with a 20 inch barrel and Mannlicher style stock..... w/ 5rd detachable mags...... added a Leupold 1-4x20 scope....if I had to grab just one bolt gun........ this handy little rifle in .223/5.56 w/ a "couple of extra magazines" would be the one.

I know the feeling, I went for a haircut and came home with anew truck.

I bought a 308/7.62 about two years ago, gun came with a wicked crisp 2.5lb trigger, no take up or over travel that rivals my custom 1911's. Only down side was $750 price, also like someone said Ruger mag's are cheaper by about 50% and dependable. I have a 2.5x M-8 Leupold pistol scope on it and it does 3/4" to 1" groups at 50 yards while shooting sitting with elbows on table. Figure with good rear mounted 6x or more quality scope it would do 1" @ 100 yards easy with my reloads. It's my truck gun.

My squirrel and plinking rifle is my Ruger 77/357, that had terrible trigger 11.5lb trigger and a foot of take up and over travel. Replaced trigger spring with 4lb Wolff spring and suddenly it had 3.5lb trigger with very take up or over travel. Got it about a year and half ago and with old trigger setup best I could do was about 1" at 25yards, haven't had it to the range yet to dial it in yet. I bet it will probably do sub 1" at 50 yards when dialed in with the Weaver K-4 on the gun. Since I reload and only shoot lead it's as cheap as most 22lr and lot cheaper then 22WMR.

I bought the plastic double stack Ruger, two 5 round for deer season and two 10 round. But the big thin 10 round Brit mag's are the best for reliability and cool factor.....but not the extra $40 cool.

Just to set the record straight magazines can be purchased at Midway or Brownell's for less than half that amount. $33.99 about the same price as Wilson mags for a 1911.

That would make it a lot more attractive to me........

Went and looked ......couldn't find any .223 Scout rifle mags for. $33.99 found Poylmer mags for .308......$32.99 ?????
