How many people have a real nice western rig for their single action revolver(s). I really don’t but I have been thinking about getting one. I just am not certain yet exactly what kind of a rig I want. I am thinking about a two gun rig with right hand draw for a 4 5/8 inch Ruger Blackhawk in .45 that drops down low for fast draw, and a cross draw for a 3 ¾ ” Ruger Vaquero on the left side. That would be up higher for easy draw when sitting, also in .45ACP.

it is kind of a silly thing for me to do, since I don't know where I would ever wear such a rig. But with open carry now in Texas, who knows?

If you live in Texas, be sure to get an authentic western rig from El Paso Saddlery, the successor to Tio Sam's 19th century shop. They are still using some of the original machinery. The drop-down "fast draw" rigs are fairly modern inventions, never used in the old days. "Slim Jim"or flop-over belt loop styles would be more authentic. If you will ride a horse, be sure the holster has a hammer thong to keep everything together.

I shoot SASS---so here is the gun rig I made for my use.

Thank you

You wisely kept the cartridge loops to a minimum. And none in the back part of the belt. Except for an occasional fast reload in a stage, I've rarely seen the loops used and when needed a few is enough. Don't need the extra weight.

This is not a SASS rig, but the rig I use 99.99% of the time when I'm in the hills. I'm in the saddle a lot, so instead of a hammer thong, I opted for a snap strap. Just a little more secure and less chance of it accidentally slipping off.

I sold this rig a while back, I'm not much of a single action guy and somebody with a matched pair kept upping his offer until I gave in. Doesn't always work but it did that time.
Colorado Saddlery for 5 1/2" Colt SAA revolvers, gold accented sterling buckle set. Probably made in the 1940's or '50's.

Several years ago I attempted entry to the world of single-action revolver sports with a holster loosely designed around that used by John Wayne in his later movies, combined with a cartridge belt with tapered ends. I utilized holster loops and matching oval appliques for the belt to offer hand-carved accents for those wishing to embellish their rigs without the excessive cost of full-coverage carving.

As usual, the prototype was made for my personal use with a 1979-vintage 3rd Generation Colt SAA in .44 Special with 5.5" barrel. This rig was produced primarily for display on the company website (displaying all options offered) but has proven to be quite useful for the occasional outing with the old Colt, very popular during visits to the local range, and a real hit during the Friends of the NRA Banquet a couple of years ago.

I am not a cowboy. Don't know one end of the horse from the other. But I have enjoyed this rig for several years and plan on doing so for the foreseeable future.

Fun stuff!

I got these for playing cowboy in my backyard.

A holster I bought on eBay and a S&W basketweave ranger belt shown with a 4 5/8" Ruger N.M. Blackhawk Bisley Flattop .41 Magnum.

Holster and belt from Carrico's Leatherworks with 7 1/2" Ruger Bisley .41 Magnum.

Rig I had made by Reddog Leather. 5 1/2" Uberti Cattleman Bisley .45 Colt and a 3 1/2" Cimarron Thunderer .45 Colt in crossdraw holster.

Crossdraw for a 7" Uberti Schofield also from Reddog Leather.

I got my SASS rig from Rich Bachman of Florence Montana. Old West Reproductions. Not fast draw but traditional styles. Great quality products and customer service. Nice guy.

This probably isn’t what you had in mind but Kirkpatrick Leather made this SASS rig for me – buckles in the back with .38 and 12 ga. reloads in the front. They were accommodating when I told them what I was looking for and they had a pretty quick turnaround time.

That shows some good use! I've not seen that make of belt before, it's like a scout and ranger style decided to have a baby. Bet it does a good job of keeping the buckle out of you without a ton of extra bulk right at your waist. Favorite of mine is this one which was the first 'fancy' rig I'd put together, and since the customer is my size and local we sort of trade it back and forth. Got a boring ol' vaquero sitting in it here:
