I won this on Ebay and it arrived today.

It was listed as a CS9 magazine, but I thought it was actually an early 3913LS 7 round in a long body magazine. Those are pretty rare and for the $45.00 bid I put in I thought it might be a nice pick up.

I opened the package and looked at it. Nope, I was wrong. It's a short body magazine. A touch longer than the CS9 magazines I have, but it fits into the gun fine.

I should have noticed the black follower from the listing, but missed it.

The base plate of the magazine is stamped S&W as the others I've seen are. I swapped it with a plastic base plate for the single stacks and it fit fine.

The magazine catch plate looks strange, but it works.

The spring is just a spring.

The follower is different as pictured. A red follower fits fine.

I'll get it to the range when I can and see if and how well it works.

So, what do I have here? Early CS9 magazine? Early pre rail 3913TSW magazine? I've never heard of an aftermarket magazine for the CS9 and this has no markings other than on the base plate.

For that matter, I've never heard of a blue/black magazine for those guns either. Some early 3914 guns had those.

Here are some pictures.

I’ve never seen a blued one but I had a seven round stainless steel flush fit magazine with metal floor plate for my 3913 NL. I think the follower on my mag was red just like the eight round mags with flush plastic floor plate or floor plate with finger extension.

The magazine pictured doesn’t look modified to me. I’m pretty sure the 3913 grip is a little longer than the CS9 and might explain why the mag is to long for the CS9.

Smith & Wesson is known for releasing small batches of products or using up parts before switching to a newer design. I wonder if the mag wasn’t manufactured for a 3914 NL or 3954.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in. I don’t think the mag was modified for a modified model 39 like the ASP.

I got to looking at the blued magazine and it looks like it is a eight round magazine. Someone could’ve replaced the plastic floor plate with a metal floor plate for a 3914 mag. I guess someone could’ve used the follower and floor plate off a blued model 39 mag and used them in a 3914 mag body. That would explain the black follower. I know people who have multiple model 39 and 3913 mags and could see someone swapping base plates from plastic to metal to shorten the mag length.

I tried it in my 3914NL and rail 3913TSW, with no luck. Won't lock in.

I think jsbethel is probably right about it being a cut down 39 magazine. I know that the genuine CS9/3913TSW (pre rail) magazines are hard to find, but that's a lot of work to get a just okay magazine.

These do not look like magazines for an ASP, Devel, or Behlert chopped Model 39s. I’ve never owned a Trapper-modified 39, so maybe that’s another one to check.

Here is a photo of one of my 39-2 mags from about 1972.
It isn't a great picture but, the follower looks a lot like the one you have.
The base retainer looks just like yours and the base looks just like yours... I rounded the nose of my base a little.
The only obvious difference is that my mag body is not glossy.
I hope this helps you figure it out

It looks like a 39 with a red follower from a 952. The 952 will work in a 39. However, when I hold a 39 over your pic the angle of the base plate doesn’t match, also the last dimple near the bottom on my 39 is closer to the bottom. That’s all I can contribute.
