I purchased a S&W, .38S&W, top break , hammered, Nickeled, pocket pistol with a 4" barrel. The serial number is 514xxx.
What generation is it? When was it made?
Is there an approximate value for it in good condition?

.38 Double Action 4th Model.
216,300 manufactured in serial range 322,701 to 539,000 circa 1895-1909.
Serial 382,002 is accepted as the cutoff between pre-1899 "Antiques" and post 1898 "Firearms" for this model.
