The 4 could mean anything. The 7 may signify the caliber is 45 Colt. The star may indicate the revolver was sent in for a repair or adjustment of some type.

Its a .38 special. I was wondering about the star. So, it was probably sent in at some point for a repair or adjustment? The odd thing is that it is a gun that has not been fired.

The star may mean it was sent back for repair or adjustment, but it may also have been stamped there as an identifying mark by someone who worked on the revolver during its manufacture. The star was used to signify a rework of some type at least through the 50s, but your revolver may be too new for that symbol to have been used. Also, there is no date stamped on the grip frame (for example 11 66) to indicate when repairs or adjustments would have been made.

How old is your 38?

Cliff...Based on the age of the revolver, I think the star is a symbol put there by someone who worked on it during its manufacture, as are the two other numbers, and has no other meaning.

Hearsedriver,

The star usually means it was sent back for some sort of service work. It might appear un-fired because it might have had a Factory refinish at some point and was never fired after that.

To clarify , does the star mean it was sent back to the factory after being released , or sent back thru the production line at some point?

mkk41...A star was used to signify work done on a revolver returned by a customer. Guns that were "reworked" during production usually have an R stamped on the left side of the grip frame.
