Yup, a pandemic would kill say 200,000 in the US. According to the link, we're already up to 17 deaths.

Since it was/is a new combination/strain, the CDC, WHO and such rightly opted to pay attention to it. Initially, it looked as though the mortality rate was much higher based on initial reports coming out of Mexico.
There's still a danger that when the regular flu season comes around, that a more deadly version will emerge, similar to the situation in 1918.

The swine flu was about further convincing the sheeple that Uncle Sam is there to protect them. Or it was about keeping us watching what the right hand was doing while the left picked our pocket.

well when you consider that about 36,0000 people die from the flue,,,any flue,,,each year,, it is really not a thing to get worried about

Everyone that died in the U.S. seemed to have underlying medical conditions. Just like every type of influenza.

The swine flu is right up there with the bird flu...remember that?
I personally saved the USofA from the bird flu by eating more chicken than I thought was humanly(sp?) possible

Well as Rong Emanewell has sed "Don't never let a good emergency go to waste."
They ain't got that health bill passed, so I am sure that with the media's help, there will be a resurgence just in time for Nancy and Harry to ram it through.

I believe to qualify as a pandemic it only has to spread world wide. For the trivia freaks the the "1918 Flu" actually started out in the early spring of 1917 and was relatively benign it's first go round. It came back in 1918 with a bang and this is what have a number of folks in the epidemiology business waking up in a sweat in the middle of the night.
Get your flu shot early next year!

As Bob rightly points out we may be in for a bad fall. However, we have already had enough media hype for two Pandemics and a pig roast.
This reminds one of the Parrot flu scare in 1929 (no I don't personally remember this). There the economy had just gone South and the media of the time led a panic that swept the nation. Eventually the media decided it had all been a big joke and mocked the public for panicking. The Gov't managed to gain a lot of new bureaucrats so all was not for naught.

The administration wasn't gaining any political advantage with it and couldn't figure a way to tax it, so it was dropped to just another flu bug.
I want to know, if a muslim dies of swine flu does he still get the 44 virgins???

Media hype. Traditional news outlets are desperate to keep their jobs, what with Americans getting tired of being lied to night after night, and the fact that most of us now go to the 'net for our news.
It's all about sensationalism. It's just quietly faded away.
That's why I haven't watched network tv news since '98. Haven't bought a paper in over a year.

Most flu deaths are from secondary bacterial pneumonia. The people who die are mostly those with weak immune systems (the very young, the old, people with diseases/taking drugs which supress their immune systems.) The mortality rate is about 0.1%.
The 1918 flu hit the people with the healthiest immune systems the hardest by causing a Cytokine Storm. The mortality rate for that one was 2-20%. Their immune systems overreacted and caused their lungs to fill with fluid.
Guys in the military would go on sick call in the morning at roll call and be dead before chow time that evening. That doesn't leave a lot of time for medical intervention. With folks flying all over the world all the time, a much larger world population, people living in much closer proximity to each other, and you've a scenario for a much worse disaster than in 1918-20.
