This question came to me in a thread about stamps.

So, numismatists collect coins. Philatelists collect stamps. What are gun collectors called?

Armorists?

Arsenalists?

How about this one:

Oplophilists?

"Phile" is Greek for a lover or collector of something.

"Oplo" is Greek for firearm/gun - put together you get oplophile, yes? :D

Then there is the Latin. I'm thinking:

Ballistalist

Anyone have something better for us? ;)

How about "Afficionado" Gun Afficionado has a certain ring to it. A friend of mine that has been a big help to me through my current Model A Ford addiction refers to me as an "enthusiast". Enthusiast's are not collectors but people that enjoy using the vehicle and making improvements to make it better usable piece of equipment, while still keeping the general overall vehicle much as Ford made them...but with improvements Ford did to the Model B, etc. For example in 33-34 he put 17" tires and wheels on, in '32 he increased horsepower by cam duration, lift and compression ratio. I go so far as installing electronic ignition and an alternator which Ford eventually did.
Friends ask me if I show my car, I have done that with other vehicles and few things pain me more than having someone come up and point out little inconsistencies. I ask them if I can see their car and get "Oh, I don't have a car here." Usually I respond with "Do you own a Harley or did Mommy just give you that shirt?"

I been accumulating guns, watches, pens, ammunition, fishing equipment, golf clubs, coins and optics for a long time.

So many of the terms have negative connotations these days and I don't like to be labeled.

Some of my friends think I'm a hoarder, but I prefer to think of myself as an ENT (enthusiast of nice things)! ;)

If you have a few guns and you pick up some because you think it's OK, you are a hoarder. Or, we could call you an accumulator.

If you spend time watching ads, or going to gun shows looking for S&Ws or Rugers, or Colts, or whatever, that pique your interest, then you are a Gun Collector.

If you bring them home and stick them somewhere, you are really an accumulator.

A true collector will buy something and shoot the **** out of it, because you realize that you will never make a profit because you intend to keep it, and you also know that your heirs will shoot the **** out of it.

This is funny. When I met my wife 10 yrs ago I had 5 Motorcycles, 2 atvs and a UTV. Not to mention 5or 6 outboard motors. Even had an old 70s mini bike. When she eventually met my son who lived out of state she said “your dad has a lot of STUFF”. My sons reply was , “yes he’s basically a hoarder but with really cool stuff”.
