I have been thinking about a S&W M&P line of pistols, I don't like compact firearms really I now currently carry a SR 45, so I am thinking something about that size or about the size of the XD 9 service model. I am not really familiar with the M&P pistols, I have heard mixed reviews about them so not sure which one to really get.
I have looked at several of the M&P line of pistols but cannot figure out what model to go with so I figured I would see what others are carrying and get there insight on these pistols.
Thanks for all replies!

I have tried most of the M&P compact pistols and my huge hands don't fit and my pinkie finger is off the grip I cannot stand that..

Maybe this!

I see they make a 45 auto in a 4" barrel which is kinda compact but not really but do they make on in 9 mm I have looked everywhere.

The one that has caught my eye is this one! I know it's a compact but it felt kinda good in hand, I have also looked at the Sccy CPX 2 and it fits good for the compact size, if they didn't have the mag pinkie extensions I wouldn't like either.

i have the 40FS, the 40c and the Shield 9.

my favorite is the 40FS. it fits my hand the best and i have a Storm Lake 40 to 9 conversion barrel and an OEM 357 Sig barrel, along with the corresponding mags.

so, not only does it fit and feel right, i can shoot 3 different calibers.

i absolutely love shooting it.:D

You would have to go and try them. I'm not a fan of compacts either but some work better for me than others. I do no like the M&P compacts nor do I like the Glock compacts or HK VP or.... but something like HK USP compact I do like or the Glock 19 or Sig 228. So you kinda have to try them. All manufacturers have a different understanding of "compact"

Compact-not subcompact-King is Glock 19. Light, yet 4" barrel, 15 rd mag, and full 3-finger grip.

I am a great admirer of the M&P semiautos and have a wide selection of them. If you want a compact but simply cannot stand not having room for your pinky on the grip, try the M&P .45 Compact. I have fairly large hands but my pinky will just barely fit onto the grip.

Another idea for the M&P 9 Compact is the Pearce magazine extension, which should give you enough room to get all fingers on the grip. I used to use one but eventually decided it just didn't bother me just to wrap my pinky under the grip, since the gun conceals a little better without the extension. Of course if you don't carry the gun concealed it won't matter.

Cheers,
Whisper

I'm a little confused. You said you want a service size and not a compact, but then you posted a picture of the compact? The 45c is more compact than your SR45, and the M&P9c is more compact than the 45c. The 45c has a 4" barrel with an 8round compact mag (with pinkie extension) and optional 10 round full-size mag. There is also a full-size 45 with a 4.5" barrel and 10 round mag. This is similar to your SR45. As for 9mm. The 9c is a 3.5" barrel, 12 round mag (pinkie extension) and optional 17 round mag. With the pinkie extension, this is a great shooter and more concealable than the "service" size. The service size is available in 4.25" and "competition" model in 5" (both 17 round mags). I only have 9mm M&Ps, and I love them all. They all serve valuable and different roles. I think the M&P Pro 4.25" is an ideal gun. Very concealable with the right gear, not too big/heavy, not too small, 17 rounds of 9mm, great sights, great trigger, great grip. YMMV.

I Have or have had the 40, 40c, and 45c. My favorite of the bunch is the 45c. If S&W made all calibers in this size frame, I'd be a happy camper.

Here it is with the 40.

I am also new to the M&P line, just wanted another 45 and was $200 cheaper than the Glock 21. I have the M&P 45 mid size and am very happy with it so far!

I really need to go and buy a M&P 40C. I have a few full size and think I would prefer the compact over the shield. I'm not trading anything in, but think the compact would be a nice addition.

I no longer have the Sr45 I sold it, kinda wish I didn't now but to late. I was looking for something like that with the full size feel looks like I will be taking a look at the SR 45 again and the M&P 45 pistols also
Thanks all!

I know what you mean, sold a Ruger P345 so that I could purchase an SR22, worst gun blunder I have made, second is selling my FDE Sig SP2022 and Glock 23 gen 4. Never will I sell another gun!

I have a M&P9 and I think for the price it is a good range shooter. If you want something to have fun at the range and also to carry, I'd recommend the Shield 9MM. It's a great gun and very comfortable. The Shield does not feel like a "compact".

I am 70 and have been carrying concealed for more years that I would like to remember. I have carried most makes and models from big to small in all major calibers. After all those years I finally settled on the M&P 9C, flat base 12 rd mag, Amerigo night sights with the Crimson Trace grip laser carried in a Stealth Gear IWB holster. I am a happy camper but remember, your decision on a weapon for CCW is a very personal one and depends on many factors. Good luck in you choice of weapons but I guarantee the first one you settle on will not be your last!
