I'm looking for a two inch barreled, blue, prelock, forged, j or k frame size revolver. Pinned and recessed preferred, but not required.

I'm not terribly familiar with all the model numbers. I think a 12 is what I'm looking for. Any others?

A model 12 K-frame would be a good choice if you can find one. In J-frames there's the M36 or M60 Chief's special with exposed hammer. Older ones with pinned barrels will only be .38 spl. New M60s are made in .357 mag. The Centennial enclosed hammer models are available today in .38 and .357. They're excellent carry guns and I highly recommend them. Look for M640 all steel in .357, M442 or 642 airweight in .38 or the super light 340 in .357.
By the way, guns made after '82 will not be pinned and only rimfires and magnums were recessed, so none of the .38s will have recessed cylinder.

I definately want an exposed hammer. 38 only is fine, and probably preferred. This is going to be a gift for my grandfather. I'm not looking for a current production pistol.

Next up; who has one they want to part with? The cleaner the better, and box Docs and tools preferred.

In the J frame, the steel model 36 or alloy 37; the alloy covered hammer 38 or steel 49. As the previos poster mentioned, there are a bunch of K frames; the steel model 10 and the alloy 12. Try the wanted to sell Forum listings plus the gun auction sites online.

Check the classified forum here, there are normally a few for sale. If you don't find one for sale, then place a posting in the 'want to buy' forum.

The Mod 36 j frame and Mod 10 are both nice revolvers that would serve your grandfather well.

I thought I had a nice model 12 locked down but the deal fell through. Still searching.

In the K frames you have the models 10, 12, 15, 64, and the 67 in .38 special. If I am remembering right none of these are recessed. If you want recessed you have to get a .357 magnum. The model number are 19, 66, 13, and 65.
The models 10, 64, 13, and 65 are fixed sighted guns.
As for the different model J frames that you might take a look at someone else will have to help you. I really don't like J frames so I can't help you here.
