I am considering putting a red dot sight on one of my 625s. The type of shooting is a cross between IDPA & USPSA. Distances are out to 35yds. We use IDPA targets with 1 sec. per point down. I see 4-7 MOA dots available. What would work best?

Also what experience have you had with various brands of red dot sights? Do I need to spend a lot of money to get one to stay together?

I doubt you would see the differance between a 4-7 dot especially in action shooting. I use a 3moa for my Bullseye guns but I see anywhere from 5-20 in USPSA guns. I tried the screen style mini dots but I'm left eye/right handed and had trouble lineing them up. I went back to the tube style where my left eye doesn't see the dot. I've had various Tasco dots and got rid of them and now used the Millett Red Dots which have a sharper dot in them.

I went through several cheap units before discovering UltraDot.
No need to worry about dot size, it has four to choose from.
First match added 100 points to my score.

Agree with handgunner356 about the difficulty lining up on the screen/holographic units.

I use a C-more railway with 8 moa on a M&P 327 R8 for Steel Challenge.

Most Steel Challenge shooters is know use an 8 moa

Midway USA has them on sale often for $208.

I picked up a Vortex Razor RDS with 6 moa for my 629. Hope to have it mounted tomorrow when I get my Smith back from the factory (small blemish in finish).

For action shooting a larger dot is easier to pick up. The smaller, 3-4 MOA dots are good for bullseye, but the fast action needs 6-8 MOA dots. I recently put a Multi dot Millet on one, and it has 2, 4, 6, 8 MOA dots.

Ultra Dot

My preference on heavier recoiling firearms, Ultra Dot, 30mm tube, 4,8,12,16 dot. Perfect for my 625.
On the 22's, have tried many, and they seem fine.

As above posts, smaller (3-4) for Bullseye and precision shooting, larger (7) for speed shooting. Attached is my 627 with a Leupold Delta Point, 3.5 dot. I like it so much, I have another on order for my 625. The Leupold is a bit more money, but the clarity, field of view, quality and mounting system sold me. If you buy the 'all mounts' model, it has about eight gun specific mounts (HK, CZ, Kimber, etc.), one of which is for the SW Revolver. Remove factory sight, utilize same screw holes to mount Delta Point. This arrangement places the mount closer to the bore line, and makes for a neat, solid, streamlined set-up. I highly recommend it (especially for aging goats with old eyes)
